  2. US Imperialism • Imperialism 1.Extension of a nation’s power over other territories. 2.Why? a. Economics- Resources and new customers b. Military c. Public Outcry 1. Cultural superiority a. Social Darwinism- We are better than other cultures like Africa, Latin-America, Asia 2. Nationalism = patriotism with a dark side!

  3. US Imperialism 3. Religion a. Mission trips b. Converting local populations c. “White Man’s Burden” to lift up the other races 1. Racist and belittling 2. Again, Social Darwinism… Americans and Europeans believed the strongest races (white) were best.

  4. US Imperialism B. The US steps out 1. The US had long been expanding, especially on the frontier. 2. In the 1870s, the US frontier was closing, and we began to look elsewhere for expansion. a. Jealous of European possessions in Africa and Asia.

  5. US Imperialism 2. First territories acquired outside of the US: a. Alaska, 1867 1. Purchased by Sect. of State William Seward for $7.2 Million from Russia. 2. Known as “Seward’s Folly,” based on public perception that Alaska was useless! 3. 1959- Becomes our 49th state!

  6. US Imperialism 4. Modern day Alaska is considered a huge value! a. Strategically b. Oil c. Sea Resources (fish, passage, etc.)

  7. US Imperialism b. Hawaii 1. Resources: Sugar, Fruits, military base 2. 1820s- Missionaries arrived 3. By 1893, due to disease, 300,000 native Hawaiians were reduced to just 40,000!!!

  8. US Imperialism 4. Hawaiians, most notable their king, Kalakaua, wanted to form their own nation. a. However, sugar plantation owners, especially Sanford Dole, forced him to sign a constitution that deprived Hawaiians of most rights and freedoms! 1. Bayonet Constitution

  9. US Imperialism 5. Annexation occurred later, in 1898, when the Hawaiian queen Liliuokalani was overthrown by US Congress! 6. 1959- Became our 50th state! 7. Today, a tourist destination and military base!
