  1. Squid Dissection Pre-Lab Notes Biology

  2. Reproduction Reproduction can happen internally or externally for animals. Either way…reproduction is sexual reproduction (2 parents that each give half the DNA to offspring)

  3. External Reproduction • When an organism deposits egg or sperm (gametes) into the environment. • Requires a large amount of egg or sperm at a less overall energy cost to the animal. • Environmental conditions/ predators may destroy most of the gametes. • Parent does not care for the offspring • Many offspring may be born, but only a few will survive to become adults

  4. Squid • Squid have 8 arms and 2 tentacles which have suckers on them to help capture prey and move. • Arms are shorter • Tentacles are longer • Have 2 eyes (bilateral symmetry) • Use gills to get oxygen out of the water for “breathing”

  5. Internal Reproduction • Requires fewer gametes to create an offspring. • Happens in a safe environment, protected from environment and predators. • Requires more energy from parent • Sometimes offspring develop inside the female • Sometimes offspring develop outside in the environment (such as laying eggs).
