  2. What is Skype? • Skype is a program where you can… • Call people-either by Skype call or by phone • Video Call and Chat • Send messages • Share files (e.g. photos, music, documents) • Skype is useful for contacting… • Family members • Friends • Anybody else you are interested in calling!

  3. Downloading & Installing Skype • Go to www.skype.com/en/download-skype/ in your web browser • On the web page, select the device (computer, mobile phone, etc.) that you want to install Skype on.

Downloading & Installing Skype • Scroll down the page to find the version of Skype that applies to your specific device. • Click the green download button if you are installing on a computer. • If you are installing on a mobile device, then there will be a button to get the app. Other devices will have their own links.

  5. Downloading & Installing Skype • When you click the button, Skype setup will download automatically. If it doesn’t download, click the “try again” link on the webpage to attempt the download again. • Locate the setup file on your computer and open it to begin the setup process. • Follow the on-screen instructions to install Skype.

  6. Using Skype- Skype Account • In order to use Skype, you need a Skype account. You can sign up for free by going to https://login.skype.com/account/signup-form and filling out their form and following their instructions. • Once you have a Skype account, you can sign into Skype and use it!

Using Skype- Adding Contacts • To add contacts, go to the bar at the top of the window/screen and click Contacts, then go to Add Contacts and you should get two options: • Search Skype Directory. This will show you a search box where you can find someone by their name, Skype Name, or email. • Save a Phone Number. Clicking this allows you to add someone’s phone number, like an address book.

  8. Using Skype - Calling Phones • Click on the Call Phones( ) icon. A dial pad should open up. • Enter the number you wish to call, and switch the nationality (flag) if the phone is in another country. • Press the green call button underneath the dial pad to begin the call. • Rates are $1.90 a minute, or a $2.99/month subscription. For more information on pricing, visit www.skype.com/en/rates/ • You cannot use Skype for emergency calls(like 911) and it is not a replacement for your phone.

  9. Using Skype- Video Calling • From your contacts list, click on the person you wish to video call. • Click on the green button that says Video Call to start the call. • Video calls are free as long as they are with a mutual contact.

  10. Using Skype- Sending Messages • You can send a message by clicking on one of your contacts and typing in the message box. • They can be sent when the person is offline, or online, like a chat. • You can send an SMS(text) to a contact if you have their mobile number. All messaging rates apply to who you’re messaging.

  11. Using Skype- Sharing Files • If there’s a file you want to share with someone, you can click on their contact and then press the “+” button. From there, you can select the option to “Send file…” and send them a file of your choice. • Depending on the size of the file, it may take longer for the recipient to download the file.
