  1. Using Skype Connect session, oct 09

Basics • Free download from http://www.skype.com/ • Skype-to-Skype calls are free • Includes International calls • Video is free (disabled on conference calls) • Need a good internet connection • Conference calls are free: 25 person limit • Create a group, or add callers on the fly • Call originator needs good internet connection and a good computer

  3. Basics • IM and file transfers too • You should have a Logitech camera and microphone already • Headset gives better quality sound (you should have one of those too) • Contact Ruth Willson to get one

  4. Setup • Download skypesetup.exe and double-click it • Create account: name, Skype name, password, email • Skype name: Extension convention is first.last followed by last 4 digits of your phone number • e.g. jeff.wood2262 • “Check your sound” button lets you test speaker, microphone, video • Good idea to do up front • Call “Sound test service” for further testing

Setting up Camera and Microphone • Tools>Options>General to set microphone, speaker, and video source • Audio settings: uncheck auto-adjust to set volume of mic and speakers • Video settings: brings up Logitech settings dialogue box • Set video zoom, position, brightness • Take Skype snapshot here too • To auto-turn on video: Calls>Call settings>Advanced options

  6. Privacy settings Tools>Options>Privacy Limit people contacting you to Contacts list or you’ll have a LOT of friends with questionable motives

  7. Adding Contacts • Contacts>New contacts • Same as Find dialogue box • It’ll return all possible matches, so you may need to narrow it down • To import a list: • Contacts>Advanced>Restore Contacts from file • Entire Extension contact list available at: • Faculty and Staff Resources>Computer Support Resources>Skype Contact list

  8. Calling Select Contact Click Call or Video call buttons Contact has option to answer with video Click red phone icon to hang up

  9. Conference calls • On the fly: • “Add People” button in the upper right-hand corner • 24 maximum • Call Initiator needs a GOOD processor • Create group beforehand: • Contacts>Create New Group • Drag contacts into the box at top • Name the Group • It’ll show up in Contacts list

  10. Instant Messaging and File Transfers • Conversation>Send • Be aware, file transfers are slow • IM is useful, particularly when… • someone is trying to configure their sound, or needs help with the call • Large group conference call
