  1. Communication Out In September 2015, 5000 of 9000 students will be in a different school than they are currently attending. Parent/student information sessions are being scheduled for all schools beginning in November A new website will be launched for the reconfiguration. The site will include all information for students, parents, teachers and the community related to the transition New information and frequently asked questions will be added to the website regularly. A Transitions Forward 2015 logo will ensure all related communication has a consistent visual identity that will clearly stand out.

  2. Grade Reconfiguration The grade configuration in all schools as of September will be: • Elementary K-5 • Middle 6-8 • Secondary 9-12 The exception will be ÉcoleJohn Stubbs Memorial School which will become a dual entry French Immersion school for students K- 8. An English program will no longer be offered at this school.

Benefits of Reconfiguration • Replace the aging Belmont Secondary School with two new secondary schools; • Align the grade configuration system within the district and with neighbouring districts (Greater Victoria and Saanich School Districts); • Ensure that continued student growth can be accommodated in the District

  5. Elementary Students All elementary schools will be K-5 with the exception of of École John Stubbs Memorial School which will become an exclusively dual entry French Immersion school for students K- 8 Current English K-4 students attending École John Stubbs will attend Crystal View Current Crystal View grade 5 & 6 students will attend Dunsmuir Middle School

Middle School Students • All middle schools will become grades 6-8 with the exception of École John Stubbs which will become an exclusively dual entry French Immersion school for students K- 8 • All current Grade 7 students will remain at their current school and transition into Grade 8. The only exception will be the current École John Stubbs English grade 5/6/7students who will attend Dunsmuir • Current Belmont zone middle school students in Grades 8 and 9 will be automatically registered as an in-catchment student at their designated high school (Royal Bayor Belmont).

  7. Secondary Students • All Grade 9-11 Belmont Zone students will be assigned to either Belmont Secondary School or Royal Bay Secondary School based on their home address. • Both secondary schools will offer a comprehensive graduation program that reflects the core competencies, skills and knowledge that students need to succeed in the 21st century. • Parents who wish their child to attend an out- of-catchment secondary school (e.g. Royal Bay catchment but wishing to attend Belmont) need to complete a School Change Request Form by Friday, December 12th, 2014.

  8. French Immersion • École John Stubbs Memorial School will become a dual entry French Immersion school for students K-Grade 8. An English program will no longer be offered at this school. • Late French Immersion will be offered for students in grade 6 at École John Stubbs Memorial School • Parents wanting to register their child for French Immersion can go directly to either École John Stubbs Memorial School (K-8) or Millstream Elementary School (K-3) • ÉcolePoirier will offer French Immersion K-5, Journey Middle School will offer French Immersion grades 6-8 and late immersion beginning in grade 6. • For students in Grades 9-12, French Immersion will be offered at Belmont Secondary School and Edward Milne Community School.

Staffing Impacts Student movement will create vacancies in some schools and the need for staffing in other schools Teachers (STA) • Teacher staffing needs will be determined following the completion of student courses selections • The post and fill process for teachers will start at the beginning of April following the process outlined in the collective agreement. Support Staff (CUPE) • The post and fill process for CUPE support staff will follow the process outlined in the collective agreement.

Timelines • November • Communication plan to Principals/Vice-Principals and all school staff • Transition plan communicated with SPEAC • Transitions Forward 2015 website launched. • Parent information session at Belmont Secondary School (6:30 – 7:30) for parents of students attending Belmont regarding transition to new Belmont or Royal Bay. • Parent/student meetings (all schools). • School Planning Council (SPC) evening at EMCS. • December • Catchment/transition Information home to students/parents with report cards.

Timelines • January • Secondary students complete course selections. • Parent information sessions for elementary students transitioning to middle schools: • Mon, January 12th, 2015 (6:30 – 7:30 pm) - École John Stubbs Memorial School (also for Grade 6 Late French Immersion) • Tues, January 13th, 2015 (6:30 – 7:30 pm) - Dunsmuir Middle School • Wed, January 14th, 2015 (6:30 – 7:30 pm) - Spencer Middle School • Thurs, January 15th, 2015 (6:30 – 7:30 pm) - Journey Middle School • Middle school students complete course selections • Registrations for middle school academies, out-of-catchment transfers and late French Immersion. • School Change Request Forms due (middle schools).

  13. Timelines • February • Students course selection input into BCeSIS/MyEDBC. • March • Staffing needs to be finalized and layoff letters issued to teachers as required. • April • Post and fill teacher vacancies. • May/June • Complete posting and filling of teacher and support staff vacancies. • Ongoing work for curriculum implementation. • Determine resources required for reconfigured schools. • Packing and disassembly of equipment (late June).

  14. Timelines • July/August • Physical move. Set up equipment in reconfigured schools. • September • Reconfiguration complete • New schools open
