  1. Excalibur The ALI’s learning network

  2. But first, the ALI’s ICT context • the majority of the ALI workforce is home-based • ICT is central to ALI’s communication, learning and development • our investment in ICT is in ‘proven’ technology (hard and soft)

  3. The technology • laptops with GPRS and XT • PCs with broadband • mobiles • innovation ALI - tablets, Blackberry, satellite

  4. Internal use of ICT (some examples) • planning inspections (IMS 2000) • preparing and editing reports (templates) • data analysis (QADR - data research) • access to information (the web) • communicating key messages (the ALI net) • communication between colleagues (e-mail)

  5. Internal use of ICT (some examples) • e-learning • area of learning sites • associate network • knowledge harvesting and transfer

  6. External use of ICT • to create accessibility and use of large amounts of data the ALI produces reports electronically on CD Roms • inspection reports - can be interrogated • thematic reports e.g. Engineering, Good Practice and Initial Assessment • Chief Inspector’s Annual Report – information and data can be manipulated and adopted for different uses – employs hyperlinks and includes all inspection reports for the year

  7. Chief Inspector’s Annual Report 2002-03

  8. Excalibur – the ALI’s learning network • part of a wider vision (let others know what we know) • designed as part of a “A national quality community” - sharing and learning • ‘a network of networks’

  9. Excalibur • not an ALI tool but a mechanism to share materials and learning • two components to date • the Inspection Toolkit incl. preparation, planning, during, use of data • the Good Practice Database by AoL, inspection type, themes, e.g. initial assessment • access via www.ali.gov.uk

  10. The Good Practice Database • launched 12 December 2003 • with examples from 30 providers • will extend to 200 examples – by March 2005 • examples are not perfect but provide approaches that work and improve the experience of learners

  11. The Good Practice Database • examples are validated by inspection • the examples are illustrated by video clips, pictures and supporting documents • materials can be downloaded • providers have to adopt and adapt materials to their own context • the contact details of the providers who created the examples are available on the database

  12. Inspection toolkit for providers • paper and web-based • from planning to grading • nominees talk about the experience • designed to lessen stress, improve preparedness and manage the event

  13. The future for Excalibur? • a quality community • partnership in knowledge management and dissemination • one voice • accessible, informative, a genuine contribution to quality improvement
