Human Body Systems Part of Objective 2
Nervous System • Control and communication network of the body. • Detects internal & external stimuli through your five senses
Parts of the Nervous System • Central Nervous System • Brain • Spinal Cord • Peripheral Nervous System • All other parts of the nervous system • Carries impulses from CNS to body
Endocrine System • Regulates hormones • Think of that moment when you get excited before a big event….that is your endocrine system releasing hormones!
Excretory System • Removes wastes from the body • Urinary tract • Kidney • Bladder
Integumentary System • Skin – main organ • Protection • Prevents dehydration • Controls body temperature
Muscular System • Enable movement • Skeletal muscle – attached to bones; moves the body • Voluntary muscle – we can decide when we want to move them • Smooth muscle – found in internal organs and blood vessels • Involuntary muscles – we have no control over their movements
Cardiac muscle • Heart • Made to not fatigue (get tired)
Skeletal System • Provides structure and support • Bones • Joints • Cartilage
Digestive System • Breaks down food into biomolecules that cells can use • Consists of: • Mouth • Esophagus • Small intestine • Pancreas • Liver • Large intestine
Circulatory System • Transport system • Consists of: • Heart • Arteries (away) • Veins (to)
Respiratory System • Movement of air in and out of the lungs • Consists of: • Lungs • Trachea • Bronchial tubes • Diaphragm
Immune System • Helps fight diseases • Composed of • White blood cells • Lymph nodes
Reproductive System • Function is reproduction of offspring • Male • Sperm • Testes • Testosterone • Female • Egg • Uterus • Estrogen
Learning Check #1 Which system contains the senses, controls body activities, carries messages and allows us to think and reason? • Nervous system • Integumentary system • Skeletal system • Muscular system A. Nervous system
#2 What are the two main parts of the CNS? • Bones and joints • Brain and spinal cord • Nerves and brain • Kidney and bladder #3 Which system provides a barrier, and prevents fluid loss? • Nervous system • Integumentary system • Skeletal system • Muscular system B B
4. A person drives a car up to a railroad crossing and stops. The driver is startled by the sound of a train blowing its whistle. The driver’s heart rate immediately increases, and the driver is more alert. Which body systems are most involved in causing the driver’s heart rate and alertness to increase as a result of sudden fright? A Skeletal and muscular B Nervous and endocrine C Circulatory and excretory D Respiratory and integumentary Answer: B
5. Which structure in the upper arm is responsible for raising the lower arm? A 1 B 2 C 3 D 4 In order to raise it, it must be attached, so its not 1 or 2. 4 is a bone not a muscle, so its answer:
7. Nutrients from digested food move from the digestive system directly into the — Endocine system does not transport anything. So . . . Excretory system gets rid of waste CO2 and H2O, not food. So . . Integumentary system holds organs and tissues in place. So. . . A circulatory system B integumentary system C excretory system D endocrine system The Circulatory System carries everything to every cell, so it is . .
8. Answer: G
