  4. About Me • Born in Minnesota, grew up in Flagstaff, AZ • Accountant at U of A for 9 years • Married since 1992 • Two wonderful daughters: Trista and Madison

  5. Schedule • School hours are 8:25 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday • Wednesdays release time is 1:15 p.m. • Students can be on playground at 8:05, first bell rings at 8:20. • Please send a written note or email me with any changes in your child’s dismissal. • Lunch is 11:20-12 everyday.

  6. Specials Class Schedule • Monday: P.E. from 1-1:50. Your child needs to wear tennis shoes and bring a water bottle. • Tuesday: Art from 1-1:50 • Thursday: Music from 1-1:50 • Friday: Library from 9:30-10 beginning week of August 20th • Friday: Computers at 12:05 beginning week of August 20th

  7. Classroom Management • Five basic rules: • Be Respectful • Raise your hand to share • Follow Directions • Change tasks quickly and quietly • Do your best! • Positive Reinforcement: tokens are given for good behavior and/or work ethic. Tokens redeemed on Fridays for various rewards.

  8. Classroom Management (cont) • Students are expected to take responsibility for their own actions. • If a student chooses to not follow a rule, he or she will be redirected and encouraged to make a better choice. • If behavior continues, student will receive a warning. • If student does not correct behavior a red token will be given and student will not receive their free time on Friday. • Parents will be called if behavior continues.

  9. Reading: Four Blocks • Guided Reading: Whole group reading strategies and skills. • Self Selected Reading(SSR): Independent reading • Working With Words: Phonemic awareness and phonics. • Writing: Six Traits (ideas, organization, voice, fluency, word choice and conventions) and penmanship.

  10. Math Curriculum • Harcourt Math • Hands-on learning –manipulatives • Number sense • Problem solving skills • Math homework will come home at least once a week

  11. Spelling • Five new sight words are introduced each week and then go up on our word wall. • Chunk (or word family) each week with our Harcourt Reading story. • Weekly poems based on chunk for the week • Students practice new words during the week with making words, writing and spelling activities. • Test each Friday over new words and challenge words.

  12. Science and Social Studies • Based on AZ State Standards, Integrated • Science: inquiry process and scientific method used in studying animals, plants, weather, earth and space science. • Social Studies: Map skills, historical leaders and American symbols will be studied.

  13. Grading Criteria • Grading system: Check mark+ = Exceeds Standard Check mark = Meets Standard Check mark- = Approaches Standard • Report cards are given quarterly: October, January, March, and May • Grading is based on Arizona State Standards for first grade http://www.azed.gov/standards-practices/

  14. Homework • Given everyday, Monday through Thursday • Due the next day • Reading log – additional 15 to 30 minutes each night • Students responsibility to return homework • Consequence if not returned – complete during recess time. • Begins week of August 27th
