  4. Role of the Counselor • Every student will be assigned a counselor • Promote student’s success in academic, social, and emotional areas • Career development for the student • Post-secondary planning for the student • Collaboration among parents, student, teachers, and administrators

  5. Additional Support Services • Learning Center (by recommendation) • Individualized student help period (ISHP) • Writing lab • Homework Club (after school) • School psychologist and Nurse/Clinic • Library Media Center • Instructional Resource Coordinator • Family Access for parents and students

  6. Best Preparation for High School Successful Completion of Eighth Grade

Transition to the High School • Spring 8th Grade Conference • Study Hall consideration • 8th graders will select classes on March 3rd - the Middle School and February 28th - private schools • Most students make smooth transition. • 9th Grade Orientation • New Parent Orientation (late August) • Students should seek help as needed. • Counselors are available before and after school, lunch hour, during study halls. Appointments are strongly encouraged. • Call the Counseling Department at 963-3990 or email your student’s counselor

  9. Graduation Requirements English – 4 years Math – 3 years Science – 3 years Social Studies – 3 years Physical Education – 3 semesters Health – 1 semester Fine Art/Practical Art – 1 semester Computers – 1 semester

  10. Four Year Colleges • English: Four years are required • Social Studies: Three years are required • Math: at least three years (four years preferred) • Science: at least three years (four years preferred) • World Language: Some colleges require 2 years. More selective colleges prefer 3 to 4 years • Advanced Placement courses – most taken in junior and senior years

  12. Mathematics • Placement based on math placement test, 1st semester final, current performance, and teacher recommendation • Most students will be placed in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, or Advanced Geometry

  13. Science • Choices are Foundations of Chemistry and Physics or Biology • Placement based on 8th grade math and science performance, science placement test, and teacher recommendation

  14. English English 1 and 2 English 1S and 2S English 9

  15. Scheduling Questions-World Language • World language strongly encouraged, but not required for graduation • Teacher recommendations should be followed from middle school and private schools • Eighth grade year reflected on transcript

Course Selection and Calendar • Private school testing - completed February 7, 2014 • WFBMS course selection – March 3rd2014 • Private school course selection – February 28th • Spring: Individual conferences with students and parent(s) and counselor • Conferences held at high school • Appointment times sent by mail in Spring

  20. Eighth Grade Conferences • Call High School Counseling Office to reschedule appointments if necessary. • Appointments are approximately 30 minutes. • Remind student on day of appointment. • Students should return to class as quickly as possible.
