Like EVERY month, November is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contribution of Native people currently as well as historically. At Portland Public Schools we have the privilege of our buildings on Chinook land. As a result of the Federal Relocation Act of 1956, Portland is home to the NINTH largest Native American November 1-30, 2013 community in the Nation. We are fortunate to have such a rich Native American community, with descendants and members of more than 300 tribes (census 2000) represented in our metro area. While each tribal nation is unique there are central beliefs which all Native American and Alaska Native people share. There is a new little person with whom to share your home, your heart… your life! Here, real moms share how becoming a mother has changed their world. *Sometimes, there’s nothing graceful about it.From the awkwardness of learning to breastfeed to lifting a heavy car seat out of a car, normal things have turned into difficult things. *Elevators, parking spots and baby changing stations are not as annoying as I once thought.I used to judge the people who would circle the parking lot until they found a “good” spot. Just walk! I wanted to say. I thought everyone should take the escalator, the elevator was not cool. I also thought the changing station was …well…just annoying. Now I find that I am a parking spot vulture, feel very happy to take the elevator, and the changing stations are not annoying! *Sleep is my next vacation spot.Good sleep! Just being able to grab ANY sleep, is such a welcome thing. Even a small nap makes me feel like I am on vacation. Grab it when you can! *Poop is a frequent (and legitimate) topic of conversation between you and your partner.This sounds gross, but really it is legitimate because it is an indicator of your baby’s health and also because it is now a daily thing in your life. Color, volume and frequency are all news-worthy. In fact, it will become so common to discuss, that it probably won’t even gross you out anymore. You will question every decision you make. Big or small, you make decisions every single day that affect your child’s life. From what brand of diapers to use to the kind of baby food I will feed my baby. Classes focus on critical issues ranging from financial health to physical and educational navigation and support. Parent University’s vision remains to provide parents with a nourishing and rigorous learning environment that provides for both a practical and inspirational learning that sparks family and community transformation. Our resources and services reflect a model and approach that values, acknowledges respects and utilizes cultural values and experiences. We treat parents as the primary protective agent for their children, and we actively connect them to school and community supports through relationship-building, advocacy, training and the problem-solving processes. McCoy Village Apartments – Community Room 4506 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Portland Wednesday’s Evenings from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Advocating for My Child’s Education - 4 Sessions Become your child’s best advocate! This workshop will highlight discussion and tools around communicating with school staff and administrators. Dealing with school discipline and understanding how to navigate through the school system. This class will also include strategies and practical tools that can be used to help support your child’s learning at home, and discuss ways to create a literacy rich environment. Effective forms of school-to home and home-to-school Communication Today’s Parent - 4 Sessions This workshop addresses areas such as; community and racial identity for my child, and looks at community as a significant role in my son/child’s life. This workshop also focuses on improving parent-youth relationships, positive parenting, improving school performance and helping your son/child advocate for themselves while learning to become your child’s best advocate. This series also demonstrates communication techniques to help build and enhance person to person communication. Parent Fair & Holiday Party - December 21, 2013 @ McCoy Village (11:00 am to 2:30 pm) BPI’s Parent Fair is an all day event where parent education workshops will be showcased. This is great opportunity for parents who have been unable to join us or have missed a session from our weekly scheduled classes. There will gifts, music, food and fun! The Portland events scene is teeming with stuff to do with the littlest of little ones. Understandably, sometimes all you want to do is gaze into your baby’s eyes or marvel at their fingers and toes (and often, that’s all you have the energy to do!). But for those times when you just need to get out of the house, here are some ideas. Book Babies at your local library. Babies ages 0-12 months can enjoy songs, rhymes, books, play – and maybe even some bubbles – at libraries all throughout Portland and beyond. The library’s schedule, sorted alphabetically by branch, is available online. Music. Your kids are never too young to get exposed to some great music. Luckily, Portland has a “kindie” music scene to beat all kindie music scenes. Many performers have weekly or biweekly shows, so you can catch a regular performance by musicians like The Alphabeticians, Mo Phillips, Mr. Ben, Tyleena Fairy Funkmother, Johnny Keener, and many others at kid-friendly locations around town any day of the week. Most of the shows have a suggested donation of $3-5. Baby Hour at the Portland Art Museum. The first Tuesday of every month at 10 AM, PAM welcomes caregivers with children under the age of 1 to take a slow guided walk around the museum with a docent, followed by coffee and conversation. Registration is required, and the cost is $5 for members, $15 for non-members. Messy Art. For slightly older babies – usually starting at around age 1 – there are plenty of options to get creative and messy! Many of Portland’s community centers have weekly “Messy Arts” or “Art Parks,” encouraging little ones to put pen to paper (or hands to playdough, or glue to feathers…). There’s one at the Montavilla Community Center on Thursdays at 10 for ages 5 and under ($2), and at the Peninsula Park Community Center on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 for ages 1-5 ($1.50). The 100th Monkey Studio also hosts a weekly Messy Art on Fridays from 10-12 for ages 1-5 for $8. Movies! But you know, sometimes you just need a break from everything – even your precious little one. If so, you may be in the mood for a Mommy Matinee, where you can bring your baby without being concerned if he or she fusses a bit. These are held at the McMenamin’s Kennedy School Tuesday through Thursday, usually at 2:30. The movies change regularly, and are $3 per adult. Northwest’s Community Moms’ Group Share stories and experiences with other moms and their children ages 5 and under. Free. Fourth Friday of every month, 10 to 11:30 am. Impact Northwest’s Community Dad’s Group An informal group for dads and their children 3 years and younger. Hang out, swap stories, eat pizza and play with your kid! English and Spanish speaking facilitators are present at every group. FREE. Every Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 pm and every Friday from 10 to 11:30 am. (Fourth Friday of the month is a field trip!)
