Module 12 The Bigger Picture Objectives • Explain how a balanced programme meets The Scout Association’s educational objectives • Describe how the Programme Zones, Methods and Underlying Ways of Working for their section help ensure the operation of a balanced programme

Module 12 Session 2 Making it Happen

Module 12 Making it Happen Objectives • Plan a balanced programme • Use a wide variety of sources, methods and themes to generate exciting and relevant programme ideas • Involve young people in planning through the use of Sectional, District and County forums, conferences and committees • Use the Self-Review process to support and enhance programme planning

Module 12 Making it Happen Good Planning • Ensures The Scout Associations Aim and purpose are achieved by using the Programme Zones over a year • Encourages the involvement of young people • Promotes young people’s progression and development • Ensures a wide variety of activities and methods • Encourages teamwork both among young people and the adult leadership team • Encourages the provision of opportunities for all

Module 12 Making it Happen Good Planning • Means more enjoyment and less pressure for adults • Ensures better use of time • Ensures better use of adults and young people • Ensures equipment, facilities and safety provision are adequate and available • Means leaders will find it easier to cope with the unexpected • Makes Scouting more fun and active • Incorporates the results of Self-Review and learns from any mistakes

Module 12 Session 2 Making it Happen Task

Module 12 Making it Happen Planning a balanced programme Need to plan over a variety of time spans • Long-term – Over a year • Mid-term – over three months • Short-term – over one month • Individual meetings – per week

Module 12 Making it Happen Create a Planned and Balanced Programme In Groups plan a balanced programme for 14 weeks from September to December Choose one week and plan a detailed evenings programme The plan should include: • Relevant Programme Zones and/or theme • Activities • A variety of Groupings

Module 12 Making it Happen Review • Looks back on what has been happening • Looks forward considering what support may be needed • Should take at least once a year • Not just about problems but also about celebrating success

Module 12 Making it Happen Review • Swap Programmes and Review, pass on any suggestions for improvements (be constructive) (10 mins) • Return and consider if you want to make any changes (5 mins)

Produce short report back
