  1. Chapter 1 Introduction to Metallurgy Materials Sciences • Metal Identification

  2. Materials sciences, which consist of the study of engineering materials, are divided into six branches.

  3. Extractive metallurgy is the study of the extraction and purification of metals from their ores.

  4. Mechanical metallurgy is the study of the techniques and mechanical forces that shape finish forms of metals.

  5. Physical metallurgy is the study of the effect of crystal structures and microstructures on the properties of metals.

  6. Metals yield in the presence of stress.

  7. Alloys are made of two or more chemical elements, one of which is a metal.

  8. Coding systems identify alloys, their alloying elements, and percentages of those alloying elements.

  9. Property identification is an important part of failure analysis, alloy development, quality control programs, and design and purchasing specifications.

  10. Metals may be supplied in cast or wrought process condition.
