  2. Roots of the Day: VID vs. SPEC VID- [VIS-] = see (from Latin videre = to see) SPEC- [SPIC-, SPECT-] = look at, examine (from Latin spectare = to watch)

  3. Examples: video = relating to the transmission/reception of a television image vision = the act of seeing spectacle = something exhibited to see as unusual, notable, or entertaining. special = distinguished in some unusual way specious = having a false look of truth, fairness, or genuineness. auspicious = blessed, promising success specimen = an item or part typical of a group or whole

  4. Roots of the Day: TANG- / TING- / TAG- / TIG- / TACT- = touch (from Latin tangere = to touch) TAC- / TIC- = silent (from Latin tacere = to be silent) TEG- / TECT- = cover (from Latin tegere = to cover)

  5. Examples: tangible = able to be touched tangent = touching only at one point tactile = relating to the sense of touch tact = a keen understanding of how to get along with others tacit = silent taciturn = habitually disinclined to talk protection = literally, “to cover forth” from Latin pro+tegere

  6. Root of the Day: FER vs. GER FER = bear, carry (from Latin ferre = to bear, carry, bring) GER [also seen as GEST] = bear, carry (from Latin gerere = to bear, wear, wage)

  7. Examples: fertile = productive or abundant gest = a remarkable deed or tale gestation = to carry in the uterus during pregnancy gesture = the use of motions of the body while speaking; something done by way of formality or courtesy gesticulate = to make gestures when speaking

  8. Root of the Day: FAC FAC [also seen as FACT, FECT, FIC, FY] = do, make (from Latin facere = to do, make)

  9. Examples: facile, facility facet = an aspect or phase of a larger whole fact, factual, factoid factor manufacture = literally, “to make by hand” from Latin manus+facere artifact, artifice, artificial = literally, “made with skill” from Latin ars+facere beneficence, beneficial = literally, “made well” from Latin bene+facere certificate = literally, “to make sure” from Latin certus+facere magnificent = literally, “to make great” from Latin magnus+facere munificent = literally, “to make a gift” from Latin munus+facere office, officer = literally, “to do on account of” from Latin ob+facere pontificate = literally, “to make a bridge” from Latin pons+facere rectify = literally, “to make right” from Latin rectus+facere pacify = literally, “to make peace” from Latin pax+facere vilify = literally, “to make cheap” from Latin vilis+facere
