  1. Infectious Disease • Infectious Diseases are passed from person to person. They are passed through the air, water, soil, and food.

  2. These all mean organisms that cause disease. • Pathogens • Germs • Microorganisms • Antigens

  3. There are six major pathogens that cause infectious diseases. They are very small and can only be seen with a microscope.

  4. 1. Virus A virus can only reproduce inside a living host cell.

  5. Name some diseases that are caused by viruses.

  12. 2. Rickettsia . Rickettsias are pathogens that are carried in the intestines of insects.

  15. Vectors A vector is any animal or insect that carries pathogens that cause diseases.

  16. 3. Bacteria Bacteria can reproduce anywhere, especially in dark, warm, moist places.

  28. 4. Fungi Fungus usually causes hair skin and nail infections.

  29. Diseases that are caused by fungus. • Athletes Foot • Ringworm • Fingernails

  30. Diseases that are caused by fungus are cured by antifungal ointments, creams, and powders. Sometimes, a prescription medication is needed.

  31. 5. Protozoa Single Celled Animals

  32. Diseases Caused by Protozoa • Dysentery • Cholera • Malaria

  33. Protozoa Diseases caused by protozoa are usually found in hot tropical untreated water.

  34. 6. Parasitic Worms Usually found in raw or very rare meat. May be found in untreated water.

  41. 5. There must be a susceptible host who is unable to resist getting the disease.
