Upkeeping DSLR - Camera Sensor Cleaning Tips & Techniques

One of the hardest and most sensitive parts of a camera to clean is the image sensor. Even if you have a sensor cleaning kit, you still need to be extra careful performing it. Leaving your camera sensor dirty will result in spotty images that would otherwise be perfect if not for the specks of dust on the sensor.

  1. Upkeeping DSLR - Camera Sensor Cleaning Tips & Techniques One of the hardest and most sensitive parts of a camera to clean is the image sensor. Even if you have a sensor cleaning kit, you still need to be extra careful performing it. Leaving your camera sensor dirty will result in spotty images that would otherwise be perfect if not for the specks of dust on the sensor. There's nothing much you can do to prevent dust from getting into the image sensor. But you can do several things, with your camera cleaning kit, to remove dust from it. Here are camera sensor cleaning tips and techniques to help you. •Check if your camera sensor needs cleaning Set your camera to the smallest aperture and to the lowest ISO. Then, take a photo of a bright white wall or a piece of paper. Move a bit and intentionally take a blurry photo (this will make dust more visible). The best way to check the image for possible specks of dust is to view it on your computer. If you see spots in the image, then your camera sensor needs cleaning. •Use your camera's auto clean mode first Before you try to clean the image sensor yourself, use the auto clean function first. Many new DSLR cameras come with this feature. All you need to do is to look for it under the tools section of the menu. When on, your camera will feel micro-vibrations. The whole process may take a few minutes to be completed. Make sure that the camera's battery is fully charged so that it won't turn off mid-clean and cause damage to the sensor. •Use your sensor cleaning kit The good thing about having a camera cleaning kit is that it provides all the equipment you need to safely and correctly do the maintenance. The swabs or sensor brush and fluid (specifically designed for cleaning camera sensors) are already included in the kit. The procedure is easy. Lock up the mirror by selecting ‘manual’ cleaning option. Simply put two drops of fluid to the tip of the swab. Don't put too much fluid or you'll leave streaks on the sensor. Gently wipe the sensor with the swap in one direction once. If you need to repeat the process, make sure to use another swab.
