One-Step Equations with Multiplication

This guide provides an overview of one-step equations involving multiplication and division. It outlines key rules for solving equations with positive or negative signs. For equations with the same signs, the result is positive, while different signs yield a negative result. Examples illustrate these concepts, showing how to isolate 'x' using the inverse operation and confirm solutions with substitution. This tutorial is ideal for students learning algebraic principles and mastering one-step equation problem-solving strategies.

  1. One-Step Equationswith Multiplication November 14, 2011

  2. BFF and Enemy Rules • BFF • Same signs  positive • Positive ÷ positive • Negative ÷ negative • Example: -25 ÷ -5 = 5 • Enemy • Different signs  negative • Positive ÷ negative • Negative ÷ positive • Example: -25 ÷ 5 = -5

  3. Solving Multiplication Problems • Get x by itself • Use the inverse operation • Check with substitution Example: -15x = 30 x is not alone -15x = 30 use division to -15 -15 to solve x = -2 -15(-2) = 30 Substitution

  4. 15x = 60 -22x = 110

  5. -16x = -96 25x = -150
