Opening Session • Scene set by energetic Gumboot dancers • Warm welcome by Deputy Mayor, Logie Naidoo • Passionate presentation by DMM, Krish Kumar • Accountants are necessary to keep engineers in check!! • Kevin Nassiep’s keynote address • Role of SANERI and energy research & development in making best use of our valuable energy resources • Phinde Nzimande – call for AMEU support on the road to EDI restructuring • 61st Convention 2008 – invitation from Sy Gourrah on behalf of BCM

  3. Opening Session • Vally Padayachee • Valedictory address highlighting some challenging and important issues to be addressed in the future • Induction of incoming President, Sandile Maphumulo

  4. 1st Session – Day 1 • Gary Bailey – Game Plan 2010 • Positive look at the opportunities for South Africa leading up to, during and after the largest marketing event in the world. A critical opportunity for all South Africans. Miss it and miss out. Some excellent Video clips to make us smile and think. • Michael Farr • Experience of Citipower in ensuring the security of supply to the Melbourne CBD for the 2006 Commonwealth games • Clinton Carter-Brown and Peter Fowles • Issues, risks and strategies suggested by the 2010 ESI Forum to help us prepare for the tournament. Still a lot to do, but the project is in good hands.

  5. 2nd Session – Day 1 • Move to more technical issues • Murray Cronje – Impact of CIE 140 • Look at performance criteria to be used in the design of street lighting schemes • Lenny Govender – partial discharge detection on metal enclosed S/G • Theory behind partial discharge and use of acoustic emission tests

  6. 2nd Session – Day 1 • Luwendran Moodley and Alex Dierks • both had a look at aspects of transformer condition assessment, the process used to determine the health of power system transformer assets. • Rossouw Theron • An in depth look at Eskom’s type test requirements for lightning surge arrester ground lead disconnectors [GLD] using the IEC 60099-4 specification

Social Activities – Day 1 • Ladies treated to a most enjoyable day at uShaka Marine World • Apparently some of them did not want to leave • Well attended Civic Reception at the Durban City Hall hosted by eThekwini Council • Most enjoyable entertainment by a group of very athletic young men and a delicious array of food

  8. 1st Session – Day 2 • Network Planning • Ed Bunge – modern network planning methodology • to meet Eskom’s future electricity demand with an acceptable level of reliability. • Anton Theron- universal access to electricity business plan • highlighted the need for R25 bn over the next five years to meet Govt’s vision of UA by 2012 • timely reminder that we must pay attention to the operational requirements arising from this massive capital programme

  9. 1st Session – Day 2 [contd] • Network Planning • Clinton Carter-Brown – process to enhance Eskom Distribution’s network planning • effective network planning builds on base data and systems • stressed the need for training & development of planning and specialist support personnel.

  10. 2nd Session – Day 2 • Network Operations • Machiel Jacobs - the approach and benefits of Work Management in a value chain operational business • need to have an asset management strategy and a specific tool as part of overall strategy to support your business • Shamal Sivasankar - took us through some very useful lessons learnt from a number of global case studies of large scale power emergencies • Recommended the need in the South African context of closer integration and collaboration in the industry

  11. 2nd Session – Day 2 [contd] • Network Operations • Peter Busch - application of RCM methodology within Eskom Distribution • Highlighted NRS 082 as the industry standard • Greg Tosen – Operation Thegko • Eskom’s process to coordinate and integrate total systems capacity and reliability over next 36 months • objective of implementing a robust emergency response process

  12. 3rd Session – Day 2 • Sustainable Development • Rob Higgo & Stuart van Zyl - Cogeneration • A history of the development of cogeneration to supplement Eskom’s generation base • Target of 900 MW by 2011 • Roy Wienand – eThekwini landfill gas to electricity project • video clip provided some frightening statistics on effects of global warming • account of success story in implementing a project utilizing carbon credit funding

  13. 3rd Session – Day 2 [contd] • Sustainable Development • Dr Yves Guenon – nuclear generation and sustainable development • World wants more energy for less CO² • Use of energy will double by 2030 • RSA must get in queue for nuclear power plant • Vally Padayachee – renewable energy sources • provocative invitation to debate whether RSA has an environment conducive for implementing RE systems • RE viewed as unreliable source due to dependency and climate variations • White Paper, 2003 target of 1667 MW by 2013

Final Session – Day 2 • Safety Briefings • Colin Smith – fatal incident case study • Misunderstanding of meaning of word ‘decommissioning’ • Resulted as a result of failure to communicate and adhere to operating regulations • Robert Mallinson • Incident at substation resulting from theft of copper earth mat – need to CHECK, CHECK and CHECK • Benefits of installation of CCTV system • Advice to not let staff work in substations or on O/H lines while lightning in the vicinity

  15. Social Activities – Day 2 • Ladies were pampered at Mangwanani Sibaya • Foot and Hand Gift!!! • Gala Dinner at ICC • Much fun was had by all

  16. 1st Session – Day 3 • Asset Management • Paul van Niekerk & Jaco van Niekerk • international best practice of EAM • Tangible benefits if implemented in a systematic way • Nigel Waters - benchmarking • can provide support for improvement in performance in our industry • Dean Griffin – physical asset management • case study on physical asset management with a focus on getting `back to basics’ • Look at AM as improving bottom line performance and not just an expense

  17. 2nd Session – Day 3 • Industry Restructuring & Professional Development • Mbulelo Ncetezo – NERSA technical requirements for distribution licencees • Distribution Grid Code. • Willie de Beer – sustainable REDs • view that we have made significant progress • need for benchmarking to understand the current performance of the business • Ivor Evans – regulation of the professions in the built environment • identification of engineering work

  18. Final Session – Day 3 • Naude van Rensburg – building capacity to service the REDs • challenges in training for skills development. • Russell Baloyi – South Africa’s environment campaign
