  1. COMMANDSimperative There are three command forms one for each form of address ( i.e. each “you”) • you: Sie ( formal ) • you: ihr ( familiar plural ) • you: du ( familiar singular)

  2. you: Sie (formal) This command is formed by simply reversing the word order. Like in a question the command begins with the predicate: • Kommen Sie herein.(Come in.) • Machen Sie die Tür zu. (Close the door.) • Rufen Sie mich an.(Call me.)

  3. you: ihr (familiar plural) This command is formed similarly - reverse word order BUT do not use the pronoun “ihr”. • Kommt [ihr] herein.(Come in.) • Macht die Tür zu.(Close the door) • Ruft mich an.(Call me.)

  4. you: du (familiar singular) Again reverse the word order , drop the pronoun AND the verb ending: • Komm[st du] herein.(Come in.) • Mach die Tür zu.(Close the door.) • Ruf mich an.(Call me.)

  5. exclamation mark / “bitte” / “doch” for more emphasis you can add an exclamation mark: Kommt herein! to “soften” the command you can add “bitte”: Bitte, machen Sie die Tür zu. Machen Sie die Tür zu, bitte. Machen Sie bitte die Tür zu. for more urgency you can add “doch” Ruf mich doch an.

  6. or , of course, you might want to add all three: Ruf mich doch bitte an!

  7. POLITE REQUESTS If the command / imperative sounds to strong (or if you are not quite sure how to form it) this form can be used as an alternative. It corresponds quite literally to the English “would you (please) do s.th” “würden Sie (bitte) etwas machen” the only difference being - as usual - that the second verb “do = machen” appears at the end of the German clause.

  8. WÜRDE “würde” for those who want to know is the subjunctive form of the verb “werden”, just as “would” is the subjunctive form of “will”. It is conjugated like this: ich würde wir würden du würdestihr würdet er sie würde sie würden es Sie würden

  9. examples Kommen Sie herein. Würden Sie (bitte) hereinkommen. Machen Sie die Tür zu. Würden Sie die Tür zumachen, bitte Rufen Sie mich an. Bitte, würden Sie mich anrufen.

  10. examples Kommt herein. Würdet ihr bitte hereinkommen. Macht die Tür zu. Würdet ihr die Tür zumachen, bitte. Ruft mich an. Bitte, würdet ihr mich anrufen.

  11. examples Komm herein. Würdest du bitte hereinkommen. Mach die Tür zu. Würdest du die Tür zumachen, bitte. Ruf mich an. Bitte, würdest du mich anrufen.
