  1. Happy Monday! November 26th, 2012 Hope you had a great break!

  2. Grammar Monday Let’s review grammar with Grammar Rock! www.youtube.com Number #1-10 and prepare for Grammar Blast review. http://www.eduplace.com/kids/hme/6_8/grammar/gr6/launcher.html?qid=0610

  3. Root Word #4 MANU means Hand Using my wiki page- which you can go to at anytime on a computer- write the root word meanings and we will go over it as a class. Think about how the meaning of hand is used in each word.

  4. Word Splash- Use the following words in a paragraph, story, or poem: congeal, discard, khaki, retrieve, scout, camp, survival, badge The most creative writing gets a reward!

  5. Survival Stories: Common Themes As we begin our “survival” unit while reading Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, we will start looking at how several stories can have a common idea or message they are giving the reader. “Different stories, Common Themes” “The Alaska Experiment” www.discoveryeducation.com.

  6. Scout’s Honor p. 361 Prewrite- How can a simple trip- a visit to a relative or friend- become an adventure? Have you stumbled into an adventure accidentally?

  7. Questions My Thoughts

  8. After reading choices: • Read the requirements of the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge on p. 374, choose 3 of the requirements. For each one, state whether the boys in the story met the requirements. Explain why or why not. • Choose either Max or Horse and write a letter from his perspective in which he describes the adventure to a friend or family member.

  9. Warm-up: Word Map

  10. Introducing Hatchet by Gary Paulsen “Somebody was screaming, screaming as the plane drove down into the water. Someone screamed tight animal screams of fear and pain and Brian did not know it was his sound…” Record any mood/tone connotative words from this excerpt. Write a prediction of the mood and tone of this novel.

  11. Journal Writing How do you get motivated to do something that seems almost impossible? Think of a time when you needed to finish a challenging task, like solving a tricky math problem or puzzle. Quickwrite for 5 minutes about the situation.

  12. Reading Check Why is Brian visiting his father in Colorado? What is Brian’s plan for landing the plane? What lesson does Brian recall from Mr. Perpich, his English teacher? How does that lesson help him as he sits beside the lake?

  13. Parallel Groups • Group 1- Let’s go over our Mood/Tone quiz from last unit. We had trouble on this quiz so let’s see what we didn’t understand (remember you get 100% for working with me). • Group 2- Create a comic strip or short story using the following vocabulary from Hatchet: amphibious, audible, hummocks, turbulence, wince (use dictionaries to write definitions before you begin).

  14. Ticket out- What survival skills did the boys in “Scout’s Honor” have to use? Would you be more or less prepared than these characters if you were trying to earn your badge?
