  14. Freedom Trail Wizard Usability Performance Goals 1 Understandable: After seeing the main page the user should understand the system is a wizard-like device, and should not have the need to use the help button to explain the screens more than once. Best Possible: The user never uses the help button Expected: The user will use the help button once Worse Acceptable: The user uses the help button twice

  15. Freedom Trail Wizard Usability Performance Goals 2 Learnable: The user should be able to get from screen to screen on an average of 1 minute. Best Possible: The user will get from screen to screen in a 30 seconds on average Expected: The user takes about 1 minute for each screen Worse Acceptable: The user takes about 2 minutes to get from screen to screen

  16. Freedom Trail Wizard Usability Performance Goals 3 Pleasing: Given a survey at the end of their experience, at least 80% of users should say they had a satisfying experience. Best Possible: 95% of users say they were satisfied Expected: at least 80% of users say they were satisfied Worse Acceptable: 70% of users say they were satisfied

  38. Freedom Trail Wizard Usability Measures Understandable: In the usability lab as the users move through the system, we will ask them a set of 10 questions relating to where certain actions will take them in the system and what certain buttons will do to test their understandability of the system. And they will be able to answer at least 8 out of the 10. For example, ask the user what screen certain buttons will take them to. Or ask the user how they view their itinerary. Or if they push this “Close” button, what screen will they be taken to. Or if they press the button labeled with a site name, what information will be displayed.

  39. Freedom Trail Wizard Usability Measures (cont…) Learnable: In the usability lab, when given a certain mission to add a particular site to the agenda, the user will be able to do it within 2 –3 minutes. For example, tell them to go into the system and add the North Church to the agenda. Pleasing: After the users have used the system, we will ask them if they liked the Freedom Trail Wizard. If they will be willing to use it again and if they were pleased and satisfied with their overall experience.

  43. Freedom Trail Wizard User Information Purpose: How we plan to guide users through our system when they need assistance.

  44. Objectives Freedom Trail Wizard • To explain our HCI role • To show our design rationale through our work products leading up to the detailed design • To show our work products produced in our detailed design • To explain our usability assessments • To show our façade prototype based on our usability test results • To show that we are ready to proceed to the implementation phase.

  46. Freedom Trail Wizard Usability Test Report • Purpose: To test and get feedback from users on the usability of the system • STEPS TAKEN: • Created a paper prototype out of screen sketches • Put together a test script based on the Hierarchical Task Model • Tested several users and gathered the results • Interpreted the results against the usability measures and usability performance goals

  47. Freedom Trail Wizard Test Script Task A: Free Exploration Task B: Enter group information for the Simpson family; Homer & Marge (between 30 and 50 years old), Bart (9 years old), Lisa (7 years old), and Maggie (1 year old). They are interested in visiting historical sites, and getting something to eat. This is an educational, family trip. Task C: View information about the Boston Common and the Old North Church Add it to the itinerary Task D: View the current Itinerary Task E: Find seafood restaurants that offer entrées for over $20 Task F: View information about Legal Sea Foods, and Add to the itinerary Task G: View the final itinerary, and finish the session Task H: Free Report

  48. Results on the usability measures: • The test results for our project have been very positive and informative. • We have collected very useful information, which contains suggestions • from our test users. Some of our users thought that if you make your choices • and hit the “Next” button the system would automatically update the itinerary. • They wanted us to be more specific about the functionality of the “Add/Update Itinerary” button. Our usability measures; learnable, understandable, and pleasing resulted as follow: • + Learnable: on average the users answered 9.8 out of 10 questions correctly. • + Understandable: on average the users were able to add a site to their itinerary • in approximately 1 minute and 15 seconds. • + Pleasing: All of our users were satisfied with the overall system, and would • use it again Freedom Trail Wizard Test Results

  49. Freedom Trail Wizard Test Results (cont…) Interpretation in terms of the usability performance goals. The usability performance goals for our project resulted in what we had expected, and some exceeded our expectations. Our usability performance goals; learnable, understandable, and pleasing resulted as follow: + Learnable: none of the users used the help button once. This result exceeded our expectations of using the help button once. + Understandable: on average our users went from screen to screen in about 37 seconds. This result is slightly better than we had expected (our expectation was 1 minute from screen to screen). + Pleasing: 100% were satisfied with the overall presentation of the system, which is better than we had expected (our expectations were 80% of user satisfaction). Some did give us suggestions about the how we could improve the system but thegeneral feeling was that they found the system helpful and would use it again.

  50. Freedom Trail Wizard Changes made before User Test Results This button was moved to the bottom of the screen To be consistent, the button to get more information was changed to be labeled with the text instead of the image This button was changed to say “More Sites” to be more descriptive This button was removed
