Uruguay Spanish is widely spoken in the U.S. but is only an official language of New Mexico State.

  6. Fiestas “Celebrations” Las Fallas San Fermín La Tomatina

  7. Las Fallas ROWDY LOUD! SMOKEY • Most unique and crazy festival • in Spain • Started as a feast day for St. Joseph, the patron Saint of the Carpenters, has evolved to a 5 day celebration of fire.

  8. Las Fallas cont. • Occurs in Valencia, Spain • Quiet city of ½ million people • During Las Fallas over 3 million participants from all over the world and the country.

  9. Las Fallas cont. • The focus of the celebration is creation and destruction of ninots-huge, cardboard, wood, and plaster statues. • Ninots- Floats (Just like NY parades have) • Placed in over 350 major intersections and parks around the city.

  10. Las Fallas cont. • Floats are lifelike • Resemble scenes and current events • Crafted by neighborhood organizations and takes about 6 months to construct. • Average cost of $75,000 per float • Floats are several stories high and need cranes to position them.

  11. Las Fallas cont. • Floats stay presented until March 19 which is know as “la crema” • Men chop holes in statues & place fireworks in them in the early evening. • Crowd chants, street lights get shut off, and floats are set on fire.

  13. San Fermín • Pamplona, Spain • July 6-July 14 • Religious festival • Dancing, prayers, and revelry

  14. San Fermín Cont. • All ages celebrate this festival • Males and females participate • Visitors come from all other countries • Celebrate with squirting vine all over other people and on themselves. • Parades have bands and religious figures in them.

  15. San Fermín Cont. • Colors- all white and red • Scarves/ handkerchiefs around neck • Bull run; fireworks set off, bulls run down streets with men running from the bulls. • Bulls run from city to the arena. • When bulls go to the arena that concludes the fiesta.

  16. San Fermín Cont. • Pamplona becomes the world capital of happiness during the week. • Procession on July 7 to celebrate the religious aspect. • Everyone is welcomed • Hemingway is an American writer that was a supporter of San Fermín.

  19. La Tomatina • World’s largest vegetable fight • It occurs every last Wednesday in August. • It has no political or religious significance. Buñol (Valencia)

  20. La Tomatina Cont. • Participants who show up from around the world. • Over 20,000 people participate. • 150.000 tomatoes; over 90,000 lbs • Every year the fight is nationally televised by the most prestigious agencies in Spain.

  21. La Tomatina Cont. • The week is filled with: • Parades • Fireworks • Food • Street parties • Reason for this fun event is because there are an abundance of tomatoes each year.

  27. Miguel LópezAlegría • Born in Madrid, Spain • Birthday: May 30, 1958 • Went to US Naval Academy • Studied systems engineering • Received a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the US Naval Post Graduate school in 1988

  28. Miguel LópezAlegría • Served as a flight instructor in Pensacola, Florida • Also a pilot and mission commander for an electronic reconnaissance squadron in Rota, Spain. • In March 1992 he received a call from Nasa.

Miguel LópezAlegría • After one year of training and designation as an astronaut, he carried out many assignments at the Kennedy Space Center. • October 20- November 5, 1995 his first mission in Space, he served as a mission specialist and flight engineer aboard the space shuttle Columbia, orbiting earth 256 times, traveling 6 million miles with having a total of 15 days, 21 hours, 52 minutes, and 21 seconds in space.

  32. Three Kings • Best- loved tradition among kids during Spanish Christmas. • The three kings are the ones who followed a star to meet the new king of kings and offered three presents: • Gold • Frankincense • Myrrh to the new-born child Belen.

  33. Three Kings • The three kings are: • Melchor • Gaspar • Baltasar • Occurs on January 6 of each year. • Boys and girls write to their favorite king about what they would like to receive.

  34. Three Kings • On the day before, January 5, the children place their shoes at the front door to emphasis how many children live the household. • Children awake anxiously as children do for the alleged “St. Nick also known as Santa Clause”.

  36. Fútbol “Soccer” • Soccer is more than just a game in Spain • Spain has great history in soccer • Spain has only been beaten by England and Italy • Soccer is a passion for men, women, and children of all ages. • Price per ticket in Europe is 20 € which is equal to $33.33 in U.S currency

  39. Tauromaquia “Bull Fighting” *Best known as controversial *Bulls also play an important role in the religious ceremonies of Iberian tribes living in Spain. * Origin of the plaza de toros (bulls) at the time is Celtic-Iberian Temples

  40. Tauromaquia Cont. In the 18th century this tradition was more or less abandoned. The poorer populations invented bull fighting. Francisco Romero was the key figure for laying down the rules for this sport.

  41. How do Bull fights go? Well lets find out  • Starts with the “paseillo”; this is where everyone involved in the bull fight enter the ring and present themselves to the President and the public. • When the individual fights begin, the individual waves a red flag that will attract the bull and triggers the bull’s temper. • At the end of each individual fight, it ends with the torero (bull fighter) using his sword to kill the bull.
