Blazar Discoveries with VERITAS: Insights from 2009

This paper discusses the findings related to blazars using the VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) observatory, presented by J. S. Perkins and colleagues in July 2009. The VERITAS telescope is equipped with 499 PMTs per camera and 345 mirror elements, allowing for detailed detection and measurement of gamma-ray air showers from blazars. Observations indicate these active galactic nuclei emit relativistic jets directed towards Earth, as evidenced by significant excess events during 20-40 hour observation periods.

  3. VERITAS Each camera has 499 PMTs Each mirror has 345 elements

  4. VERITAS shower • Detection and Measurement • Location (direction) • Size and brightness (energy) Gamma air-shower

  5. Jetting Blazars are generally thought to be AGN with relativistic jets, where the jet direction is oriented towards earth. Blazars are observed/discovered at VERITAS based on excess events (100s) over the observation period (~20-40 hours).
