Introduction to the Variational Methods in Finite Element Method (FEM)

This chapter marks the beginning of Part II of the course, focused on the mathematical formulation of Finite Element Method (FEM) using energy-variational methods. Unlike the Method of Moments (MoM) covered in Chapter 5, this approach extends to two-dimensional and three-dimensional problems. We will revisit the bar element within the context of a variational framework, introducing key concepts and identifying Tonti's work in this area. This section aims to equip students with essential tools for advanced applications of FEM.

  1. This Chapter begins Part II of the course, which covers the mathematical formulation of FEM, based on energy-variational methods The main advantage over the MoM approach of Chapter 5 is extendibility to 2D and 3D We begin with doing the bar element again, but now with a variational framework

  2. Identify Tonti
