  1. Article3: Cardiaclife.net AED DEFIBRILLATORS – ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW An AED defibrillator is a portable, lightweight instrument that sends an electric shock from the chest towards the heart. This shock stops the irregular rhythm of the heart and allows the regular rhythm to be resumed in case of a sudden cardiac arrest as it can cause a rapid loss in the functioning which, if not treated in minutes, can also lead to death. AED defibrillators have made it possible for more and more people to act in response to a medical emergency wherever defibrillation is needed. As AED defibrillators are portable, they have become more accessible to non-medical people. They can be useful even in emergency cases where cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is required. An AED defibrillator comprises of a built-in computer that checks the victim’s heart-rhythm with the help of some adhesive electrodes and calculates if defibrillation is required. Most of the time, the device has a recorded voice that directs the rescuer when the shock button has to be pressed. This shock causes the heart to get stunned which momentarily stops its activity which, in turn, helps the heart resume its beating activity effectively. The user is guided by the instructions to carry out the process with ease. AED defibrillators advise for a shock only in the case of ventricular fibrillation or some other condition that is life-threatening. This is called pulse-less ventricular tachycardia. People with a non-medical background such as police, flight attendants, fire service personnel, security guards and other personnel, who are given proper training, can use AED defibrillators in medical emergencies. These devices are safe and easy to operate. According to the statistics, AED defibrillators have been successful 90% of the time in detecting any irregular rhythmic movement of the heart and can effectively suggest if shock is needed or not. AED defibrillators should be present in all the first-response providing vehicles, may it be an ambulances, a law enforcement vehicle and even fire brigade engines. These should also be present in first aid kits in areas like sports complexes, airports, office complexes, and other public as well as private places. Standardized AED pads are appropriate for use on children who older than 8 years of age, whereas, for children of the age group of 1-8 years, special paediatric pads need to be used, that are able to attenuate the electric current to be delivered at the time of defibrillation. Although the use of AED defibrillators is not recommended for children who are of the age group of less than 1 year but if in case, there is no other alternative, the paediatric pads should be used. AED defibrillators have proven to improve the survival of individuals dealing with a heart attack. They help in avoiding delayed treatment during the critical time where emergency measures need to be administered. Reduced time for defibrillation in turn improves the victim’s chances for surviving the cardiac arrest. Thus, having the AED defibrillators located appropriately for first aid to be given in the time of need can ensure better rates of survival of any person experiencing a cardiac arrest before shifting the individual to a hospital.
