  1. Article2:Cardiaclife.net Defibrillator Training What is a defibrillator? Many of us have heard about it and must have even seen being used in many movies.Imagine a person having a Sudden Cardiac Arrest event, surrounded by doctors and nurses carrying a device trying to pump the heart through a dose of electrical current. This treatment is called defibrillation - the most common treatment for life threatening cardiac arrhythmia- irregularity in a rhythm, especially of heartbeats or brain waves. These electronic or computerized devices are used for delivering a therapeutic dose of electric current to heart patients and are called Defibrillators’. Defibrillators measure and record the heartbeat informationand quickly diagnose the heart rate characteristics and administer an appropriate electric shock to the heart if the diagnosis warrants it. Defibrillators are easy to use. Defibrillators can be external known as automated external defibrillators (AEDs) or implanted. All the defibrillators may not look alike but their functionality is almost the same. Most sophisticated medical equipment requires a trained person to operate them. CPR/AED Training becomes all the more important for the person handling lifesavingequipment like defibrillators. Anybody can be trained to administer a shock that can save a life, but the most effective CPR –defibrillator training is that which provides the best prepared responders. The use ofexternal defibrillators can be learned through advanced cardiac life support courses. Some companies help responders learn the use of automated external defibrillators by simulating cardiac arrest episodes to provide realistic training experience. This kind of training ensures that the trainees are prepared for the actual situation. CPR Training programs can utilize the Philips Heartstart AED trainer 2 that is preconfigured with 10 such realistic training situations developed in accordance with the emergency responder training programs. Besides, to add more flexibility to this program, anoptional Philips programming kit is provided through which instructors can design and configure three custom scenarios. Cardiac Science, Zoll, Heartsine, Physio-Control and Defibtech all offer AED trainers for cpr/aed/defibrillator training. Programs can include any Philips’ HeartStart trainer, CPR and first aid instructors provide knowledge to the students about HeartStart Defibrillators and how they can be used to save lives. The use of automated external defibrillators becomes easy with these training courses. All you need to do is turn on the AEDs and it will provide clear audio textual instructions and one has to just quickly and precisely follow them. Philips Heartstart AEDS will guide the user to the electrodes and shock button if the user is not following the prompts. Moreover due to the built-in protection mechanism, there is no danger in using AEDs. The user cannot shock anyone who does not require a shock. Although it is proven that the use of defibrillators increases the chances of survival of heart attack victims by 100% when compared with just using the CPR techniques, it is observed that in public situations only 30% of the people come forward to help the Sudden Cardiac Arrest victims. The reason being is that they are afraid to act as they do not want to harm the victim. An increased level of training in the use of automated external defibrillators along with CPR techniques can improve skills and therefore provide the confidence and courage to use a Defibrillator in an emergency situation.
