  2. To SHOCK the HEART • To stop fibrillation of the heart • Fibrillation = useless quivering • Allows the heart to resume a normal rhythm Purpose of an AED

Consider the following: • The AED paddles must be attached to bare skin. • Bare the chest • Shirt, bra, necklace, medicine patch, etc. (anything that will be in the way of the paddles) • Apply to dry skin • If victim is wet (e.g. drowning), dry off the torso so the paddles will stick Prior to using an AED…

  4. Consider the age of the victim • AED paddles come in adult and child sizes. • Adult = puberty and above • Child = 28 days old to onset of puberty • If there are only adult paddles, they can be used on a child. • Simply placing one paddle on the chest and one on their back (between the shoulder blades).   5. It is actually quite SIMPLE. • Turn on the AED and follow the directions given. Using an AED

  6. Connect Electrodes • Hook paddles up to the AED • Attach paddles to the victim (see diagram on paddles). • Indicate that the paddles/electrodes have been hooked up by pressing the button with a picture of the paddles on it. • Stand Clear -> Analyzing Now Using an AED - command prompts

  7. Once the AED has been hooked up and turned on, leave it connected. • Continue to follow the directions given by the AED • It may tell you to check pulse, begin CPR, or stand clear. Using an AED
