  1. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program State Education Law Section 917 became effective September 1, 2002 and requires public school administrators to ensure the presence of at least one (1) operable AED at each school, as well as appropriately trained, certified staff volunteers in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) in each school building/annex, etc., who can respond to medical emergencies.

  2. AED Program For schools/programs which share the same building, Principals must ensure that each school/program is AED/CPR ready at all times. In addition, the law also requires the presence of trained responders and AED(s) at all school-sponsored activities (curricular or extra-curricular events and activities) on-site as well as off-site.

  3. AED Drills The NYC DOE contracted AED vendor will conduct two unannounced drills at each school every year. The importance of AED drills cannot be stressed enough. They are designed to refresh and enhance skills learned during CPR/AED training. In addition, drills test and improve the school's response system to medical emergencies. Participation in AED drills by all staff is crucial.

  4. AED FAQs How do I obtain an AED for my school? Contact the AED Program Managers at the Office of School Health at 212-374-6757/55. The AED Program Manager will request an evaluation of your site by the DOE AED vendor. Once the vendor submits the evaluation results to our office you will be issued an AED(s).

What if I don’t have the minimum number of 8 staff to host a training class at our school? Individual staff members can register to take available classes at other sites by visiting http://doe.emergencyskills.com/individual_registration1.php

  6. AED FAQs continued How long is CPR/AED certification valid for? CPR/AED certification is valid for two years. Once a certification expires what should we do? Schedule a training class for your staff close to the expiration date of their certification.
