  1. DIE WITH JESUS AND LIVE(Jer 31:31-34, Heb 5:5-10, John 12:20-33) 22ND MARCH 2015

  2. INTRODUCTION • OCCASION YOUTH AND STUDENT SUNDAY • TOPIC: DIE WITH JESUS AND LIVE • OUTLINE

  3. OUTLINE • Meaning of dying • Knowing Jesus • Dying with Jesus • Living with Jesus

  4. MEANING OF DYING • Merriam Webster Dictionary explains death as: • the end of lie, • the permanent end of something, • permanent cessation of all vital functions. • Death brings everything to a complete end. • When someone dies the person ceases to exist on earth, no life, no movement etc.

  5. KNOWING JESUS • As Christians we all know that Jesus died for us to redeem us from sin and to set us free from the effects of sin and the grave. • John 3 16 -17 “ for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that who so ever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but the world through him might be saved.

  6. THE OLD COVENANT • The books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy) highlights statues, laws, ordinances and commandments that God gave to the people of Israel. • These commandments were on tablets, the laws, precepts, status and ordinances were or scrolls and had to be read out from time to time to remind the people of God’s accepted way. • When one broke the commandment/law, he/she had to offer sacrifices to God to atone for his/her sins with lambs, pigeons, sheep, turtle doves etc.

  7. THE NEW COVENANT (Jer 31: 31-34) • Jeremiah 31:31 34 explains how God decided to establish a new covenant with his people. • Jeremiah 31:32-33 “it would not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers. This is the covenant I will make with the house of the Israel after that time; declares the LORD. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people”.

  8. The new covenant ushers us into a new fellowship with him. It’s about relationship, fellowship, togetherness. The new covenant impresses on our minds: • to know God deeply • to love God dearly • to serve God devotedly

  9. Hebrews 5 Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah spoken of as "a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek" (Ps. 110:4), and so Jesus plays the dual role of the king and priest once and for all. According to the writer of Hebrews (7:1-17) Jesus is considered a priest in the order of Melchizedek because, like Melchizedek, Jesus was not a descendant of Aaron, and thus would not qualify for the Jewish priesthood under Law of Moses.

  10. Melchizedek is referred to again in Hebrews 5:6-10; Hebrews 6:20; Hebrews 7:1-21: "Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek"; and Hebrews 8:1. • In verse 7-10, Jesus offered prayers and supplication with strong crying and tears to God and was heard. This can be likened to the days of old when the high priest visited the holy of holies to bring up a sacrifice for the children of Israel once in a year. If the sacrifice is not accepted he was struck dead and since no one could enter the place, he was pulled out with a rope tied to his waist. However if the sacrifice is accepted he comes out with lots of shouting and joy by the people.

  11. On the cross, Jesus performed the sacrifice once and it was accepted by God because: • Jesus satisfied God’s requirement • Jesus was without sin • Jesus suffered for our redemption • Therefore Jesus died for our sins once and for all.

  12. Hymn 276 • The word of God in John 12 explains that unless a seed (grain of wheat) falls into the ground and dies it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. • Jesus prophesied about his death. • His death was meaningful and purposeful. • His death brought us remission of sins, redemption of sins • forgiveness of sins.

  13. DYINGWITH JESUS • Before Jesus died, he had a few followers but after his death lots of people were convicted and became followers. We call ourselves Christians because we are also followers of Christ • When Christ was crucified on the cross, our sins were nailed with him on the cross. • We have been set free from the bondage of sin because of the resurrection. Thus , the resurrection power empowers us to overcome sin

  14. As Christians we have to remember that the power was broken on the cross. Romans 6:14 says “For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace”. No sin should condemn us. (NIV) KJV – For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. • Dying with Christ means dying to sin and overcoming sin

  15. Christ died for our sins, therefore we should be able to refrain from our sins and live holy lives. This calls for daily repentance and sanctification. Heb 12:1 • Jesus reminds us that the one who loves his life would lose it and the person who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. • Loving our lives means cherishing the things of the world so much that we put God’s things aside. 1 John 2:15-16 • We need to die to the things of the world and live for Christ.

  16. LIVING WITH JESUS (John 12: 20-33) • This means knowing Him and obeying his commands • Jesus continually urges us to follow him an d serve him. Whoever serves Christ, the Father will also honour • Living with Jesus also means witnessing and leading people to Christ. Some Greeks (gentiles) came to Phillip to be introduces to Jesus. Phillip took them to Andrew and they both led them to Jesus.

  17. REQUIREMENTS FOR LIVING WITH JESUS • A constant relationship and fellowship with Him • Regular/daily personal devotion or quiet time. • Obeying all commandments and living a life that is pleasing. • Commitment to God’s work.

  18. BENEFITS WITH LIVING WITH JESUS • Jesus promises us a place in heaven (John 14:21) • Joy and fulfilment on earth • Answered Prayers (peace of God, protection, riches, blessing) • Miracles (Healing etc) • A crown of life ( Rev 2:10) • Eternal life (John 3:16) • Helper (Holy Spirit)

  19. CONCLUSION • Ecclesiastes 12: 13 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear (Obey) God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” It is only when we give up our self and die that we can really live.
