  1. “Where Are the Nine?”Luke 17:11-1909/03/2006Dr. Dane Boyles

  2. Where Are the Nine? 11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” (Luke 17:11-13)

  3. Where Are the Nine? 14When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him-and he was a Samaritan. (Luke 17:14-16)

  4. Where Are the Nine? 17Jesus asked, “Werenot all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” (Luke 17:17-19)

  5. Where Are the Nine? • Look at their Condition. • They were lepers: unclean “Leprosy is nothing short of living death, a dissolution of the whole body, so that one limb after another actually decayed and fell away.”

  6. Where Are the Nine? • They were afar off. • They were without hope.

  7. Where Are the Nine? • Look at their Cure. • They all cried out to Jesus. • They cried out in humility. • They were commanded to go.

  8. Where Are the Nine? • Look at the ‘One’. • He came to Jesus. • He returned to worship God! • He returned to glorify God! • He returned to give thanks to God! • Jesus came to Him.

  9. Where Are the Nine? • Look at the Comparisons. • The ‘One’ is a picture of a repentant sinner who comes to Jesus. ‘For by grace you are saved through faith...’ (Eph. 2:8). • The ‘Nine’ are a picture of the religious. • They saw Jesus only as a great teacher. • They sought only for a cure for the condition that they were in.

  10. Where Are the Nine? • They were more concerned with the outside than with the inside. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. (Matt 23:25-28)

  11. Where Are the Nine? • Jesus asked, ‘Where are the nine?’ 12“...there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) 31“...believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved...” (Acts 16:31)

  12. Where Are the Nine? • Consider the Application. • They were needy. • They found the help they needed. • Be thankful for the way the Lord blesses us. • Thankfulness brings additional blessings upon us.

  13. Where Are the Nine? • Conclusion • Be thankful for the way the Lord blesses us. • Thankfulness brings additional blessings upon us.
