  1. Why do we punish people? LO –To investigate the six aims of punishment

  2. 6 aims of punishment Protection Retribution Deterrence, Reformation Vindication Reparation

  3. Protection Society must be protected from dangerous criminals. Criminals lose their freedom so others do not have to worry about their activities.

  4. Retribution (revenge) People deserve to take revenge on the criminal. Giving the criminal what they deserve. An example would be the teaching ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’.

  5. Deterrence Put someone off committing crime a crime, teach them a lesson

  6. Reformation A punishment to change (reform) the criminal so they learn to be a good personand change their future.

  7. Vindication People must see that laws are upheld and respected Those who break them should be punished to show society will uphold justice.

  8. Reparation The criminal should pay back the victim/ society They might do community service or apologise to their victim.

  10. Exam practice • Describe and explain the main aims of punishment. • All punishment should be designed to get criminals to see the error of their ways. What do you think? Explain your opinion. • “All criminals should be made to do unpaid work to pay back the community for what they have done wrong. What do you think? Give reasons for your opinion.”
