  4. What is Civics?

  5. What is it? • Civics: • Study of Citizenship and Government. • Study of Rightsand Duties • Citizen: a member of a community. They owe loyalty to the government and are entitled to protection. • Came from Greece in 590 BC • Government: the ruling authority of a community. It has the power to make and enforce laws. • Duties: something you have to do. • Rights: something you get just b/c you are a citizen

  6. The Common Good • The ultimate role of the government is to do the greatest good to the greatest number of people without harming others.

Why Do We Have Government?? • Make laws • Keep order • By enforcing the laws • Set up armed forces. • Provide services • Libraries, schools, hospitals, parks, water, utilities. This is why we pay taxes!! • Provides a plan for the community • Public Policies—short and long term goals • Preventanarchy • The absence of any form of government

  8. Levels of Government • National/Federal • Highest level • Makes and enforces laws for the whole country. • State • Makes and enforces laws for the state. • Local • Makes and enforces laws for: • County a.k.a. Parrish a.k.a. Bourgh • City • Towns • Villages

John Locke and Natural Rights • 17th century English Philosopher • Influenced Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence. • Natural Rights= people agree to give up some of their freedoms and abide by the decisions of their government. In return the government promises to protect the lives, property, and liberty of the people.

  10. Citizenship • Being a productive and active member of society. • Fulfilling your duties and responsibilities as a member of each of these various groups and communities. • You need to be trained • Benefits and costs

American Values • We are ALL guaranteed certain freedoms under the U.S. Constitution. • Equality • “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…” • Liberty • Freedom • Justice • Your rights can not be taken away from you as long as you follow the laws.
