Music in the 1950s • The 1950s were a time of change for the music industry. • Racial tensions were being strained with the beginning of the civil rights movement and the music reflected those tensions. • R&B and Rock and Roll helped to bridge the gap between the white and black people and further the civil rights movement.

King of Rock and Roll • Elvis Presley was thought to be the king of Rock and Roll by many and rose to fame after beginning a professional relationship with Sam Phillips.
Culture in the 1950s • This was the decade when people began to recover from the Great Depression and WW1. • Employment rates were high • Technology increased • Many popular artists and music come from this decade • 1950s brought the best film and T.V shows ( I Love Lucy)
Cars were a huge deal if you wanted to go to the Drive In which was very popular and you needed a car to be there.
Fashion in the 1950s • Women's: • Swimwear: one pieces were worn with attached shorts. • Dresses were worn with large poof skirts. During the end of the of the decade A line skirts had became popular. • Teenage and young adult fashions became a new marketing technique, this allowed them to be their own person.

1950s Hairstyles • Women sported the beehive hairstyles, while men wore a conservative, crew cut, military style.
1950s Men’s Fashion • A classic look was a button down shirt, suspenders and fedora hats • Inspiration for the western style came from the hit TV show ‘Gunsmoke’ • Tweed became a very popular fabric for men’s shorts.

1950s to 2013 • Holden wouldn’t be able to buy drinks from the bar and wouldn’t be able to purchase smokes • His parents would have known where he was and that he had been expelled from Pency • He would have been able to communicate with his sister • Holden would not be able to get a prostitute and he wouldn’t be able to get one for 5 dollars.
