Windows 10 Imaging • All laptops that can run Windows 10 must be upgraded by 6/1/19 • Laptops in OIS as of Oct 21, 2018: • Windows 10: 302 • Windows 7: 92 • Unknown: 7 • Next Windows 10 image updates will be for the 2018/9 Tax-Aide system and the late Oct/Nov image. (Wait for it!) • Windows 7 image will not be updated. Its password will be left at IRS TY2017 • Tax-Aide USB maker: Simple to use 2018 TCS Sept Webinar
Laptop Refresh • Goal is to ultimately eliminate use of IRS laptops and printers • Eligible new sites may receive up to three laptops and one printer • Tax-Aide technology refresh replaces older computers and is dependent on funding • Additional computers may be obtained using donated funds • A backdoor for replacing old computers… 2018 TCS Sept Webinar
Printer Refresh and KRACK • Driven by Key Reinstallation Attack (KRACK)—WiFi vulnerability • Mitigation: • Update printer firmware (Jan ’18 or newer) • Do not connect printer using WiFi • Do not use Windows printer sharing • One network printer, one backup per site • Refresh targets obsolete printer (e.g. HP 1020 series). Details TBD. • Printer refresh models: • HP LaserJet Pro M102w (WiFi only) • Brother HL-L2370DW (WiFi and Ethernet) 2018 TCS Sept Webinar
Router Security • Do not use public WiFi networks or networks that you do not control • VPNFilter and KRACK vulnerabilities: Must use firmware issued during the calendar year of the tax year (e.g. 2018) or later • Updated routers available through TCS • Routers may obtain Internet access via: • Hard-wired Ethernet port • WISP connection to public WiFi • WISP connection to hotspot WiFi 2018 TCS Sept Webinar
Hotspots 2018 TCS Sept Webinar
Hot Spot Analysis • Hot spots should be the “last resort” for Internet access • Hot spots with no usage in 2017 will not be activated without justification • CO1 cost for data in TY2017 was approximately $5,200. 2018 TCS Sept Webinar
