  2. The Vacuum Oil Company Mobil Oil started out way back in 1866 as a business called the Vacuum Oil Company.

  3. Socony Socony, the other major partner in Mobil's history was formed in 1911. Socony stands for the Standard Oil Company of New York.

  4. Merger In 1931, Socony merged with the Vacuum Oil Company to form Socony-Vacuum.

  5. Mobiloil The Socony-Vacuum company started trading under the name Mobiloil in 1961.

  6. Mobil 1 Mobiloil introduced Mobil 1 in 1974, a 5W40 synthetic oil that is a higher quality oil than anything else on the market at that time. The Mobil 1 brand was a direct replacement of the Mobiloil brand.

  7. Exxon In 1999, Mobil and Exxon merged to create the brand ExxonMobil. The company still trade their products under this brand name. They later introduced the new Mobil 1 logo.
