Key Terms • Communist/ism • advocacy of a classless society in which private ownership has been abolished and the means of production and subsistence belong to the community (Marxism, Leninism, Socialism) • Proletariat • in Marxism, the class of workers, esp. industrial wage earners, who do not possess capital or property and must sell their labor to survive. • Totalitarianism/ism • absolute control by the state or a governing branch of a highly centralized institution. • Authoritarian/ism • a governmental or political system, principle, or practice in which individual freedom is held as completely subordinate to the power or authority of the state, centered either in one person or a small group that is not constitutionally accountable to the people.
