  4.  Your task • Read the story of the Battle of Hastings your teacher gives you. • Match a heading to a topic paragraph. • List the reasons why Harold lost and why William won the battle.

  5. Reasons for Harold’s failure • Challenges to throne within weeks of becoming king • Weak claim • Harold had to defeat Hardrada in North and then William in South (300 miles away!) • Didn’t rest his troops • Men poorly positioned • Couldn’t control his army

  6. Reasons for William’s success • Good general • Experienced • Army well-trained & armed • Well supplied • Good weather • Good military strategist • Built castles, e.g. Dover • Brought in reinforcements

  8.  Your task • Imagine you are a war correspondent for one of the armies (but don’t tell us which, we must guess) on the battlefield at Hastings. Write a report on the main events. Include the following • A description of the different armies • What had happened previous to the battle • The main events of the battle • The conclusion of the fighting • Try to use as much technical & descriptive vocabulary as you can

  9.  Homework • Finish and print out a copy of your report on the battle. • Use ‘Audacity’ on your laptop to record a 30 second section from your report. You may wish to include sound effects as well. When you have finished export it as an MP3 file and email it to me.
