Peoples of North America • Arctic and North West Region • The Inuit [Eskimos] have inhabited the region. • Lived by hunting and fishing • Kwakiutl, Nootka and Haida Peoples lived along the pacific coast of Southern Alaska to Northern California. • They collected shell fish and hunted whales and seals. • Kwakiutl is especially known for Potlaches. Peoples of North America • Eastern Woodlands: the Iroquois • Lived in modern NY, PA and Southern Canada • They had villages composed of longhouses • Hunting and gathering were their main economic activities • A total of five groups formed the league through a Great Peace – achieved through the efforts of Deganawida and Hiwatha.   4. A Grand Council settled their disputes • Women [clan mothers] elected the members of the council. • Peoples of the Great Plains • Hunted Buffaloes • Grew corns, beans and squash • Lived in tepees. U.S. History & Geography

Peoples of the Southwest • The area included New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. • Anasazi People established a farming society. • They used irrigation to grow crops in the desert. • They lived in pueblos made of adobes. • Pueblo Bonito and Mesa Verde were centers of their civilization.   6. People of California • Kashaya Pomo, Yurok, Hupa and other native people populated California and adapted their lifestyle to its varying topography and climate. U.S. History & Geography

  7. Shared Cultural Patterns of Native Americans • Trade • Native American people interacted with one another and exchanged various goods over vast trade networks. • The trade networks covered all of the continent using river routes and forest trails. U.S. History & Geography

Shared Cultural Patterns of Native Americans • Land Use • Land was not privately claimed. • It was considered source of life. • Religious Belief • Many had animistic beliefs • They also believed in a supreme creator – the “Great Spirit” or “Great Mystery” or “The Uncreated Creator” U.S. History & Geography
