  3. We want the best and the brightest? • What are your current skill and experience gaps? • What will the new person bring to the team

  4. What makes a successful employee? • Research by Meredith Belbin; ‘Changing the way we work’ – Butterworth Heinemann • The candidate from an unrelated area or discipline is often the most successful in the job e.g. construction • How many problems at work arise from the way jobs are set up?

  5. Do we allow for the fact that a job needs to grow and develop? • AGR are excellent at facilitating sharing good recruitment practices across different employment sectors – AGR and AGCAS

  6. Competency frameworks • Or just concentrate on what you are good at? • Does it discriminate against someone brilliant in one aspect but weak in others

  7. Alternative approaches • Eden project – can you tell a story? • Placements and internships • Mentoring • Is the process bound by culture/social and economic background

  8. The sum of the team is greater than the constituent parts
