Remember that as a parent, you are your child's first teacher. • Respect towards self, others, and school property • Coming to school prepared each day (Supplies, homework, etc.) • Reviewing curriculum concepts nightly on a consistent basis • Reading EVERY night and asking your child about his/her reading
Your child will experience a variety of emotions before starting third grade: • Excitement about entering an “upper” grade level • Pride • Fear of the unknown regarding SOL’s
Practice Routines: Ritualizing back-to-school time is another way you can help make your child's transition to third grade a bit easier. • Starting with proper supplies is ESSENTIAL • Attend a meet and greet night (if applicable) • Bus stop and bus number • Set bedtime and establish homework routines
General Information: • Class size ranges from 20-27 in a classroom • Homework is a nightly routine and enforces what has been taught in classroom • Interims are issued each 9 weeks • Report cards are issued 4 times per year • Communication is important • Parent Teacher Conferences
General Information: • Change in grading scale • 94-100 A • 93-84 B • 83-74 C • 73-64 D • 63 and below F • *There is talk of a change but this is still the norm for now.
General Information: • Testing: • PALS (for those who did not pass spring of 2nd grade) • DSA (Developmental Spelling Assessment) • DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) • Benchmark tests/SOL simulation • SOL’s in Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies covering K-3rd grade concepts
Typical Third Grade Schedule: Opening Language Arts 2 hours 30 minutes Math 60 minutes Science 50 minutes Social Studies 50 minutes Resource 45 minutes (Art, Music, PE, Library, Computer or World Language) Daily 5 stations/ literacy stations Lunch Recess
Summer Activities: • Read, Read, Read and discuss what your child has read together • Summer journaling about fun family trips or adventures • Math fact practice • Review word wall words (writing and reading)
How to establish a working relationship with your child’s teacher: • Attend all required conferences/request a conference when you have concerns or questions. Come prepared with questions regarding reading level, test results etc. • Make sure you understand classroom procedures and rules • Check your child’s homework agenda nightly and make sure you know what he or she is currently learning in core content areas
