  27. Suffering and Submission • What Will Help A Church During Times of Suffering? • Elders Who Submit • Submit To God • Submit To The Flock (The Church)

  28. Suffering and Submission • The Key To The Elders’ Submission: • They Are To Work, But Not Under Compulsion…Voluntarily. • They Are To Work According To The Will of God. • They Are To Work With Eagerness and Not For Sordid Gain. • They Are Not To Lord Over The Flock, But Prove To Be Examples.

  29. Weird and Wrong Ideas • “Not Lording Over” • Elders Have No Authority To Make Decisions. • I Don’t Have To Submit To Their Decision If I Don’t Like It. • If I Don’t Like The Decisions The Elders Make They Have To Step Down. • I’ve Had Trouble With Elders In The Past So I Just Won’t Place Membership Where There Are Elders. • We’ve Done Fine Without Elders, Why Do We Need Them.

  30. James Coffman • “Not Lording Over” “The English version here is somewhat too strict for the Greek and for the sense. The New Testament clearly teaches that in a sense (limited, of course), the elders are ‘lords’ or rulers over their congregations; and what is prohibited here is not the exercise of their lawful authority, but the improper exercise of it.”

  31. Zerr • “Not Lording Over” “If a man considers the church as his own, then he is indeed likely to rule in an improper manner…The desire for power is an ever-present threat to every congregation on earth.”

  32. Elders and Authority • Acts 15 – The Elders of Jerusalem Were Consulted and Asked To Make A Conclusion About The Gentiles. • Acts 11:30 – Money Was Given To The Elders To Distribute To The Needy Saints of Their Church. • Titus 1:5, 10-11 – Titus Was To Appoint Elders To Help Silence Rebellious Men.

  33. Elders and Authority • Acts 14:23; Titus 1:5 – Paul and Barnabas Appointed Elders In Every Church. • James 5:14 – Elders Were To Be Called When A Man Was Sick That They May Pray Over Him. • 1 Peter 5:5 – Young Men Are Exhorted To Submit To The Elders (The Key = Humility). • Heb. 13:17; 1 Thess. 5:12-13 – Submit To Your Leaders.

  34. Submission • The Church Does Not Belong To Us. • We Are Privileged To Be Members Of It. • If You Are Not A Faithful Member, Then It Is Time To Submit.
