Introduction to Stanford 9 The Arizona Student Achievement Program uses the Stanford Achievement Test Series, Ninth Edition (Stanford 9), to test: • Word Study Skills (grade 2 only) • Reading Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension (grades 2 through 9) • Mathematics Problem Solving and Mathematics Procedures (grades 2 through 8) • Mathematics (grade 9) • Language (grades 2 through 9)

  3. Arrival of Stanford 9 materials to the schools • Tests will arrive March 10th or 11th • Inventory materials immediately • Report discrepancies to Bert 617-8187 • Keep original boxes for return of materials • Keep testing materials secure

What to expect in your shipment • Stanford 9 BOX Inventory • Cover Letter from A & R (Handling and Returning Information for Stanford 9 - Spring 2004) • Test Security Affidavit • Barcode Labels for Answer Documents (Except for Gr. 9) • Stanford 9 Rulers • Test booklets (2nd grade consumable) • Answer documents • Practice Tests for Grade 2 • Directions for Administering Stanford 9 • Return Box Labels

What to do if you need additional materials • Call or fax Accountability and Research and we will put your order together • Materials are secure, they cannot be sent through the mail • Materials can be picked up at the Accountability and Research Test Distribution Center at 1132 E. Broadway (phone: 617-8187, fax: 617-8188)

  6. Preparing Test Administrators • review of the entire test administration procedure (schedules, assignments, etc.) at a staff meeting is necessary • staff meeting, discussions should include the following: • scheduling and timing of subtests • room arrangements • preparing students • securing materials • completing student identification information • proctoring

  7. Ensuring Proper Test Administration • Test Security Affidavit – only Principal needs to sign • Any deviation from the procedures set forth in the Directions for Administeringcould invalidate the test results and needs to be reported immediately • Directions for Administering bookletshould be distributed to the Test Administrators upon receipt in the building in order that teachers fully understand the procedures to be used

  8. Ensuring Proper Test Administration (continued) • Information displayed on bulletin boards, • chalkboards, or charts that can be used by • students to help answer questions should be • removed or covered • A “Testing – Do Not Disturb” sign on the • door is helpful

  9. Assisting Teachers in Scheduling Test Sessions • Make certain that the allotted time for each test • session has been arranged in each classroom/grade • Grades 2-8 will take 4 hrs. • Grade 9 will take 3 hrs. • All tests, including make-up tests, must be • completed by March 29 • Provide the number of minutes of uninterrupted testing time indicated for each subtest, NO MORE, NO LESS

Test Preparation • Maintain all student test materials in a locked storage area until test administration • No student, teacher or parent should be allowed to examine a test booklet prior to testing nor should any part of a test booklet or the Directions for Administering be reproduced. NO EXCEPTION • Have following supplies available: • a sufficient quantity of No. 2 pencils with erasers • blank scratch paper for mathematics (DO NOT RETURN) • timing device (accurate to the nearest second) • copy of test booklet and answer document for demonstration

Maintaining Standardization Conditions • At the beginning of each test, the Test Administrators should tell students that some items will be difficult and that while they are not expected to get all the items right, they should attempt to answer as many items as possible • This assurance should be given repeatedly in order to motivate students who might have a tendency to give up • Students should be encouraged to use any remaining test time to check answers • Administrators should adhere strictly to the directions as written - no help may be provided to the class or individual students with specific test items

  12. Monitoring During the Test • During the test administration, Test Administrators should monitor the • testing process by moving unobtrusively about the room • In moving about the room, Test Administrators should check that students are working on the correct page, are turning pages when necessary, are marking answers properly, and are not spending too much time on any one item • Scratch paper must be collected by the Test Administrator after each • subtest where it is used and returned to the Building Coordinator after • testing for disposal • Calculator use not permitted

Handling Emergency Situations Properly • If a student becomes ill during the course of a test: • the testing session for that student should be ended immediately • the booklet should be collected and a note made of the amount • of time that has elapsed since the test began • It is then permissible to continue the test at some later time- • in such cases, a few minutes should be set aside for • orientation at the beginning of the new session • If the student does not complete the test in a later make-up session, items attempted during the abbreviated period should be erased

Identification Information on the Student Answer Documents • IF A STUDENT HAS A PRE-ID LABEL: • teacherdoes notneed to complete the grids onPage 4(back cover )of Answer Document with the exceptionof the “Other Information” grid and “Accommodations grid” (#14) - if needed • teacher does not need to complete questions (1- 12) on Page 3 (inside back cover) with the exception of indicating Title I (if applicable) or of indicating Braille or Large Print in Question 12 (if needed)

  19. IF A STUDENT DOES NOT HAVE A PRE-ID LABEL • the following information needs to be filled in at the • top of page 4 (back cover) of the answer document • STUDENT NAME (use legal name, not nicknames) • TEACHER • SCHOOL • DISTRICT • GENDER • GRADE • DATE OF BIRTH • AND

IF A STUDENT DOES NOT HAVE A PRE-ID LABEL (continued) • The following grid fields also need to be filled in: • Student’s LAST NAME, FIRST NAME and MIDDLE INITIAL (MI) • should be printed in the boxes above the name grid. Bubbles should • be blackened to match the letters of the name. Left justify the last and • first names • DATE OF BIRTH – month, day, and year. Day must be 2 digits • (e.g., Third day of month = 03) • GENDER – Female or Male • STUDENT NUMBER – Matric (Every box should have a number) • SAIS NUMBER – Numbers vary, so not every box will necessarily be filled in • OTHER INFORMATION – Column J (according to IEP) • ACCOMMODATIONS – Per Content Area for Standard Or Non-Standard 20

Exceptional Education • New Language this year – no longer use term “modification” • Standard Accommodations = changes in presentation or responses to test that do not change fundamental assessment • Non-standard Accommodations = changes in presentation or responses to test that alter fundamental assessment Accommodations • Accommodations must be used in daily instruction

  27. This box needs to be filled in for any student with an accommodation. If a non-standard bubble is filled in, then the J column MUST be filled in also. 27

Other Information (Column J) OnlyJ needs to be filled in with a 1 - 8 Codes for Column J can be found in Test Administrator’s Manual: 1 = Non-standard accommodation in reading 2 = Non-standard accommodation in mathematics 3 = Non-standard accommodation in writing 4 = Non-standard accommodation in reading & mathematics 5 = Non-standard accommodation in reading & writing 6 = Non-standard accommodation in mathematics & writing 7 = Non-standard accommodation in reading, mathematics, & writing 8 = Home schooled student tested at your school

English Language Learners (ELLs) • English Language Learners must take the Stanford 9 in English with no accommodations unless stipulated on IEP • There are some accommodations that can be made if student meets LEP guidelines as specified by the Arizona Department of Education • See TUSDStats, click on Resources and then click on LEP Guidelines (ADE) and find guidelines for Stanford 9

Inspecting Answer Documents • After testing, remind teachers to check each answer document to ensure that the following has been done. • Appropriate level and form administered • Light marks and marks made with a colored pencil, ink, or felt-tip pen need to be marked over with a No. 2 pencil • Students’ names have been recorded in both the print field box and printed and coded in the grid field. (Make sure only one bubble is filled in each of the columns provided • OR A Pre-ID label has been affixed to the proper spot • All erasures are complete and neat • “Other Information” and “Accommodations” sections filled in if applicable

Return of Scoreables – Grades 2 - 9 • Scoreables refer to : • consumable test booklets for grade 2 • answer documents (bubble sheets) for grades 3 – 9 • Group noncompleted scoreables by grade level • Group completed scoreables by enrolled grade • Make sure barcode labels are properly oriented • Place scoreable label on outside of box(es) – please use original boxes

Return of Scoreables – (continued) • Bring copy of Stanford 9 BOX Inventory with you • Scoreables ARE NOT to be banded • Do not use with clips or rubber bands; this will damage answer document edges • Please sign-up with Bert for time to return scoreables Dates for return of scoreables: March 29 – April 1

Return of Non-Scoreables • Separate Test Booklets, “Test administrator’s Manuals”, and Stan 9 Rulers • Pack materials in original boxes • Place copy of A & R inventory sheet in first box of non-scoreables • Place non-scoreable label on outside of each box • Non-Scoreables will be picked up by warehouse truck April 14 & 15 • Make certain that someone in the office knows where the materials are located when they are to be picked up
