The First Amendment encompasses five critical freedoms that protect individual rights in the United States. These include freedom of speech, which divides into pure and symbolic speech, allowing individuals to express their ideas freely. It also guarantees freedom of the press, enabling criticism of government authorities while navigating libel and slander laws. Furthermore, it secures freedom of religion, prohibiting state endorsement and ensuring the right to practice one's faith. Finally, it protects the rights to peacefully assemble and petition the government for change.
