2. The Need for Dental Care Poor oral health has been associated with cardiovascular risk, higher risk of coronary heart disease, increased risk of cancer mortality and exacerbated systemic conditions, such as diabetes and respiratory diseases.
Oral health is critical for good quality of life and acceptable social support
3. Behavior Risk Factor Survey 2005 Finally, Berrien Health Plan enrollees were asked what locations they would be willing to visit if a low-cost dental clinic were to open in the area. Respondents were allowed to choose more than one location. 81.4% of enrollees thought they would visit the clinic if it was located on M-139 across from Target. Finally, Berrien Health Plan enrollees were asked what locations they would be willing to visit if a low-cost dental clinic were to open in the area. 5. Dental Survey Berrien Health Plan-B Enrollees (<150% of Poverty) Susan Holcomb, the medical social worker, is surveying enrollees in the Berrien Health Plan about their oral health. As of Monday, she had contact with 43 enrollees. The survey they are asked to complete includes questions about when they last visited the dentist, whether or not they have a dental home, reasons why they have not visited the dentist, whether they need dental care, and where they would be willing to visit a low-cost dental clinic. The data I am going to present is from this survey. This is a convenience sample of Berrien Health Plan enrollees willing to participate, but I think that the data is very alarming.
Of those surveyed, only 25.6% had been to the dentist in the past year and 55.8% had not been to the dentist in over five years. 71.4% reported having no regular dentist or dental office home.Susan Holcomb, the medical social worker, is surveying enrollees in the Berrien Health Plan about their oral health. Even though, only one quarter of survey respondents reported visiting the dentist in the past year, 90.7% of survey respondents claimed that they wanted or needed dental care at this time. The main reason that Berrien Health Plan B Enrollees surveyed were not going to the dentist is cost. Respondents were allowed to choose more than one answer as a reason for not visiting the dentist. All of the enrollees who answered the question felt that cost was their number one deterrent from going to the dentist.Even though, only one quarter of survey respondents reported visiting the dentist in the past year, 90.7% of survey respondents claimed that they wanted or needed dental care at this time.
