  1. Front of Pack Labelling

  2. Agency Signposting On 9 March 2006 the Food Standards Agency Board recommended that voluntary signpost labelling is based on four core principles: • 1.Provide separate information on fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt • Use red, amber or green colour coding to indicate whether levels of these nutrients are high, medium or low • Use nutritional criteria developed by the FSA to determine the colour code • Give information on the levels of nutrients in a product

  3. ‘Traffic Light’ Signposts in the Marketplace Sainsburys Co-operative New Covent Garden Soup Company Waitrose

  4. Developments in FOP labelling in UK - impetus for revisiting advice • Since 2006, majority of manufacturers and retailers have voluntarily introduced FOP labels which adhere to some or all of the Agency’s recommendations. • The various FOP labels mainly differ in the interpretive elements used within them. • Evaluation of FOP labelling schemes. • Consultation on technical issues associated with developing a single approach. • A series of nationwide Citizen’s forums.

  5. GDA only in the marketplace Coca-cola, Kraft, Masterfoods, Nestle, Danone, Kelloggs, Unilever, Walkers, Cadburys. Tesco Morrisons Lidl Somerfield

  6. ‘Traffic Light’ with additional GDA in the marketplace Marks and Spencer Avondale McCain Moypark Bernard Matthews

  7. Citizens’ Forums - Findings • High awareness of FOP labelling. • FOP seen as a way to save time & make informed choices. • Co-existence of a variety of FOP nutrition labels make it difficult for consumers to make product comparisons; • Desire for an approach developed and controlled by Government to help inform choices. • Liked a FOP label which included text, %GDA and TL colours

  8. 40% of consumers say they check labels for fat • 37% say they check labels for saturated fat • 50% say they check labels for salt • 39% say they check labels for sugar

  9. FOP Consultation – some of the issues • Calories • GDA for Sugars • Salt • Saturated Fat • Scope • Portion Size • Legibility • Public awareness

  10. FOP labelling framework • Provision of information on the amount of fat, saturated fat, sugar, salt and calories in a portion. • Provision of portion information (e.g. 1/4 pie or 1 biscuit) and number of portions per packet. • Provision of interpretive elements • High, Medium, or Low text  And/or • Traffic light colours  And • %GDA values in a portion • Flexibility in presentation • Application to a wide range of pre-packed composite processed foods.
