  4. Blood Cells • 45% of the total blood • The living portion of blood • ErythrocytesRed Blood Cells (RBC) • Leukocytes White Blood Cells (WBC) • Thrombocytes Platelets

  5. ErythrocytesRed Blood Cells (RBC’s) • 5,000,000 RBC’s per drop of blood • Carry oxygen through the blood • Oxygen attaches to hemoglobin • Iron is needed to make hemoglobin

  6. LeukocytesWhite Blood Cells (WBC’s) • 5000-8000 per drop of blood • Fight infections and cancers • Amount per drop of blood will increase with infection

  7. White Blood CellsNeutrophil • Engulf and destroy bacteria

  8. White Blood CellsEosinophil • Engulf and destroy foreign cells (pollen, animal dander, etc.) • Release chemicals that kill parasites

  9. White Blood CellsBasophils • Release histamine at the site of tissue injury • Release heparin to limit the size of forming blood clot

  10. White Blood CellsLymphocytes • Engulf and destroy viruses • Produce antibodies
