  1. APPLICATIONS OFMETEOSAT SECOND GENERATION (MSG) Sea Surface temperature (SST) Author: Pirkko Pylkkö (Finnish Meteorological Institute) pirkko.pylkko@fmi.fi Sep 2005

  2. Sea Surface Temperature (SST)background MSG channels 3.9, 10.8 and 12.0 µm are used in the SST algorithms. OSI SAF SST definition (see http://www.osi-saf.org/) : Subskin SST : Comparable to in situ (buoy) measurements at night. • Relation to bulk SST : equivalent to bulk SST by night. By day, a bias of several Kelvin may be found under favourable diurnal heating conditions. • Relation to skin SST : by day and by night the subskin SST is convertible to skin temperature by subtracting 0. 2K.

  3. Examplesof OSI SAF products There are vast areas of missing information in the 3 hourly product due to the cloud cover

  4. Examples of OSI SAF products 12-hourly (combination of several timesteps) Mediterranean product. • Meteosat-8 resolution is enough to show the SST in broad terms, but not in detail

  5. Examples of OSI SAF products 12-hourly SST of Southern Africa • Meteosat-8 resolution is favourable to Africa; some of the largest eddies are seen in the SST product

  6. Examples of MPEF SST products MPEF SST South Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean • Largest eddies can be seen, • Cloudiness is the cause of large areas without data

  7. Examples of MPEF SST products • Example of MPEF SST over the Atlantic • Two 3 hourly timesteps of 3 hourly field averages

  8. Examples of MPEF SST products The SST is not changing dramatically, but the apparent change in the images is due to the change in the weather systems
