  2. Basic Game Idea • The following slides are a brief overview of the game rules and idea.

  3. Rules • Students have to earn money by solving real life problems that characters in the game present to them. • Use the money to go shopping, attend sporting events and to buy/build cars. • Use money to obtain passport stamps when you can afford a trip.

  4. Goals • Deepened understanding of 6th grade math objectives (geometry, algebra, probability, percents, fractions and decimals) • Learn interaction and problem solving skills.

  5. Conflict/Competition • Have the Best Passport • Win prizes and/or money for solving group presented problems

  6. Interaction • With peers~ Can form teams to solve large problems • With game~ Very immersive real life world to explore • Interact with professional characters in game that present problems

  7. Representation • Of Learning~ Stamped passport to represent level of accomplishment • Students are applying and evaluating their knowledge to solve real life problems

  8. Possible Problems students are presented with.... • Musician~ How to build this instrument using angles • Mechanical Engineer~ Use fractions and decimals to compute formulas in car design • Architect~ Using algebra to find missing lengths for a bridge • Home designer~ Area and perimeter for paint/carpet (better buys per square feet) • Journalist~ Predicting events using probability

  9. Extra Events • Shopping- tax, discount, percents • Sporting Events- probability and stats • Cars- build parts (geometry), buy (basic computation)

  10. Vacation Spots • Will be bought on skill level, or with money earned: to be stamped in passport for student representation and competition; as well as for teacher use • -NYC • -LA • -Miami • -Hawaii • -Aruba • -Belize • -Paris • -London • -Australia

  11. Continuation • This game could continue on forever. • The students could become problem creators • Come up with problem and possible solutions • Present problem to novice learners • Provide support to novice learners

  12. Learning Theory • Engagement! • Very visual • Immersive • Competitive • Audio and visual aspects • Manipulate virtual objects (Kinesthetic)
