  2. THE BROCK’S GAP WAY

  3. The Brock’s Gap Way-RESPECFUL • This means thinking good things about who a person is or how he/she acts. Showing respect for others include things like not calling people mean names, treating people with courtesy, caring enough about yourself that you don’t do things you know can hurt you.

  4. The Brock’s Gap Way-RESPONSIBLE • Doing the right thing whether or not someone tells you. This means being trustworthy, dependable, and accountable.

  5. The Brock’s Gap Way-RESOURCEFUL • This means you are capable of dealing with difficult situations. You may have to be creative and imaginative.

  6. The Brock’s Gap Way-SAFE • Not causing harm or risking harm to yourself or others.

  7. 5th grader carpool is on the right side of the building. In the mornings, you walk down the sidewalk in front of school and enter the building thru the front doors. 5th Grade Carpool

  8. Bell Schedule * 7:45-Morning Bell rings* 8:00-Considered tardy* 2:55-1st load bus and walkers released* 3:02-2nd load bus and carpool released

  9. Attendance After 3 unexcused absences, a letter will be sent to your parents. At 5 unexcused absences, your parents will have to meet with the principal.

  10. Early Morning Procedures If you arrive to school before 7:30, you will report to the lunchroom. -Breakfast is optional  At 7:30 all 5th graders are dismissed from the lunchroom to the practice gym. You will sit with your class until the morning bell rings.

  12. Four fifth grade teams consist of four classes and one team consists of two classes. The teams are called the Discoverers, Explorers, Navigators, Voyagers, and Adventurers. This means you really get to know a lot of kids. You will go to lunch, field trips, and PE with this group; as well as sit together for assemblies and special events.

  13. * Beginning the day — Enter the room politely; put away your backpack, lunch, and coat; turn in your homework; sit at your desk and read alone, write your upcoming work in your agenda, or do before-school work silently. 5th Grade

  14. BGIS BROADCAST Tune in every morning at 8:00 for BGIS broadcast. This is where you can find out information about what’s going on at school. On Friday’s, we have a “week-in-review.” Keep an eye out for pictures of you or your friends.

  15. *Pledge — When you hear/see the signal, stop what you're doing immediately and stand up; place your right hand over your heart; say the Pledge of Allegiance respectfully; during the 30 seconds of silence, quietly think about the things you want to learn today and how you will act in class.

  16. LOCKER Your locker is where you will keep all your stuff. If you keep it organized, all of your books and things will fit in it. The one important thing to remember about your locker is your locker combination.

  17. INDEPENDENT READING(IDR Time) Independent reading is time set aside for you to spend with a “Just Right Book.” This time will either be before lunch or after lunch.

  18. We have an Academy Program and it is AWESOME! Academy is where you get to choose what you would like to learn more about. We have academies that deal with technology, cooking, gardening, and even photography. Academy changes about every 6 weeks; therefore you get a chance to participate in many classes. Sounds great doesn’t it? Told you Academy was awesome!

  19. You have to dress your best. The dress code is enforced so you really need to wear the right clothes. Just a few no’s…no gym shorts, sweat pants, spaghetti straps, short shorts, etc. DRESS YOUR BEST!

  20. PE is FUN! You start off with a few exercises to keep you healthy and then after the warm up exercises it is time to play. You will participate in flag football, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, and many more fun activities.

  21. TECHNOLOGY We use Edmodo. No, I did not say Komodo, but Edmodo. It is an online site that lets you have educational discussions with other students and teachers will put assignments online that you can work on. It’s a great way to stay educationally connected.

  22. CHROMEBOOK Fifth graders will receive their Chromebooks by October. Digital citizenship is extremely important at Brock’s Gap. Please remember to take care of your device. This means carrying and storing your device properly.

  24. SPECIALS Each week fifth grade students have special classes. They will go to art, music, guidance, library and technology. Yes, fifth graders go to a computer class every week! Plus, their teacher can take them to the computer lab for extra time or they can check out laptops for their class. So, one thing to know is that at Brock’s Gap technology is a big deal.

  25. There are many ways to get involved. There are many opportunities to participate in different activities here at Brock’s Gap. You can run for student council, be a part of the math team, go to First Priority, be a part of the school newspaper staff, be a Peer Helper, or work on the school yearbook. Wait, we don’t have enough time for me to name everything. Just know that there are lots of opportunities to get involved. Be Involved

  27. *Helping other students — In a cooperative classroom, it is good to help one another; if someone needs help with directions or reading an assignment, help him or her if you are able; never put down another student who asks for help.

  28. Getting into work groups — Take all the materials you will need; greet each other; complete the task doing your personal best; thank the others in your group.

  29. Restroom Breaks *When and how to use the school restroom — You may go to the restroom between class transitions; do not play in the restroom; return to class before two minutes have passed (promptly).

  30. Leaving the room — Tell me where you are going; take the correct hall pass or sign out on the door; do not run or play in the hallways or restrooms.

  31. *What to do during free time — If you finish an assignment, first work on any unfinished work; when you finish those, you may choose to do your classroom job, read a book, write a story, illustrate a book that you have written, make up math problems, work on a research project, peer-tutor someone who needs your help.

  32. Signals for attention —If a teacher or administrator hold ups a “zero”; as soon as you see the signal; stop what you are doing, hold a zero up to show that you acknowledge what you see, look at the adult, and listen for directions.

  33. Lining up — Stand up quietly; push in your chair; take all necessary items; line up without touching others or talking; face the front of the line; watch where you are going.

  34. LUNCH • Lunch is really delicious! Our lunch at Brock’s Gap is a self-serve lunch so you will put the food on your own plate. This means you get to choose what and how much you get…but remember to keep money in your lunch account. • In the lunchroom, sit together as a class at the assigned table. Throw away your trash when you are finished eating. Do not wait until the end of the lunch period.

  35. *Visitors in the classroom — When visitors enter the room, you may say hello— a smile is great!; when the visitors introduce themselves, say, "Welcome to our class, __________"; remember, most visitors are here to watch you learn, so be ready to explain what you are working on; treat visitors respectfully. Do not interrupt the visitor while he/she is speaking and keep voices very quiet.

  36. *Ending the day — Clean off your desk; pick up any trash within three feet of your desk; come back to your seat; wait quietly to be dismissed. * Afternoon Dismissal – We will pack up at 2:55. You should pack your binder, go to your locker, and then come right back to the classroom and wait for the announcement to dismiss. When dismissed WALK down the main hallway stairs. You are NOT allowed to hang out in the hallway while you wait for dismissal.

  37. * Make Up Work – if you are absent, it will be your responsibility to come and ask for your make up work. It will also be your responsibility to complete it and turn it back in. If you fail to do this, you will receive a zero. * Missing Assignment – If you miss a homework assignment, you will sit alone at lunch and complete your assignment while you eat silently. You will also fill out a missing assignment take home note that will need to be signed by a parent. * Several Missing Assignments – If you have several missing assignments, you will be asked to go to Friday School. It is held every Friday afternoon from 3-7pm.

  38. Brock’s Gap is fun! Teachers make learning fun, field trips are fun, Academy is fun, PE is fun….So, get ready to learn and have some fun at Brock’s Gap!
