  4. Course Format (M & W afternoon) • Allowed 10 minutes break per hour of teaching • 2:15 PM- 4:05 • We’ll go from 2:15 to 3:50 without break if that’s OK with the class

Objectives • Appreciate the strategic role of operations in all types of organizations. • Understand the importance of links between customer needs and operations design. • Describe the ways in which the operations function interacts with other functions, particularly marketing and finance. • Identify sources of waste in operations.

  14. SCM at PSU • Currently 150 students in program (60 graduates per year) • 100% placement • Currently salaries for grads ~ 50K (SCM) ~ 40K (FILC Certificate) • Salaries for experienced people (8-10 yrs) ~ 150 K today with market shortage of people • Why a shortage??????

Exams (100 points each) • Each 4 weeks of material • Lectures • Textbook & readings • Cases & class discussions. • Some material will be covered only in class. • Closed book but you can bring a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper with notes. (2-sided) • Calculators NOT phone/blackberry • Missed Exam Policy: There will be no make-up exams. If you miss an exam you receive a failing grade.

Participation & Attendance (100 points) • Participation is key! • You learn in proportion to what you put into this class. • Lots of opportunities to get involved • Class attendance is expected. • attendance will be reflected in your participation grade. See page 5 of syllabus for details. • If you anticipate missing a class, I would appreciate if you would let me know about the situation in advance.

Group Field Trip – 100 points • Team Proposal (5pts) • The group will select a plant to tour and submit a written proposal to the instructor (via memo) by October 5, 2007 that consists of: • Group member names (4 people) • Company name and brief description of its products • Plant location • Name and phone/e-mail information of plant contact • Please have agreement from contact by that date.

  24. Field Trip Project – continued • Proposal (5 points) • Written Report (80 points): 5 pages not including appendices • Team Peer Review (15 points).

Class Etiquette • Laptop use in class is discouraged • Calculators will be very helpful for in-class exercises, • Cell phones/Blackberries/etc. should be turned off for class periods, • Please be respectful of your classmates and professor by listening when they are talking and not creating side conversations.

  26. REQUIRED MATERIALS • Operations Management, by Roger G. Shroeder, published by McGraw-Hill Irwin (referred to as “Text”). Available at the PSU bookstore ($90). (Amazon $60-79) • Littlefield Technologies Code. Must be purchased from me by October 3 otherwise you can not get credit for the exercise. ($15 or check to Responsive Learning Technologies). • I have no way of getting you onto the game after it starts on October 8 so please sign on by October 5 to get credit. • A calculator should be brought to class every day.

  27. Team Formation • You will need to have your team formed by this week. • You will need to get your Littlefield Code and each team member should sign on. • By Next class • Agree on team name • Agree on team password • Sign in on-line by next week
