Kristine Larson, a Kansas State University mechanical engineering major, reflects on her transformative summer internship with the Booster Mechanical group under Nicolas Charalambous. Working on the Juno Mission, she aimed to learn essential Atlas acronyms, shadow experienced engineers, and participate in hands-on rocket operations. Throughout the experience, she tackled challenges, gained firsthand engineering insights, and networked across the company. Her successful summer was marked by running procedures, coordinating tasks, and contributing positively to ULA’s mission.

A Little About Me • Kansas State University • Graduating May 2014 • Major: Mechanical Engineering • Minors: Leadership Studies and Physics • Hometown: Galva, KS • Interests: While here long walks on the beach • Working under Nicolas Charalambous for the Booster Mechanical group on the Juno Mission • Fun fact: Grew up on a farm where my dad and brother still work 600 acres
Goals and Objectives • Learn the Atlas acronyms • Understand the booster system and the process • Shadow someone that deals with every part of the rocket • Make an difference at ULA this summer • Participate in the Intern rocket program • Help me find a focus on my major • Get to know all the interns and hang out outside of work • Get to know as many engineers, technicians, managers, HR, etc. as I can • Have fun!

Migrating from EPIC to ORBITS X45-BST04-VIF, X45-BST01-SKD, & X45-BHY02-VIF
PIRS • When running procedure for heated leak checks, we found an audible leak in the stem of the GN892MV valve. I had the opportunity to run a PIRS report for it, coordinate for the valve replacement delivery, and supervise the operation. Compiled Burnoff Lists • Task given by James Whelan, basically just combining all the booster burnoff lists into one Master file and sorting through to combine same part listings to make a more efficient ordering system for post launch.

Results & Conclusions • Throughout the summer I was able to accomplish all my goals • Learned acronyms • Now understand more about the rocket, and the booster system • Got a variety of experiences by shadowing people with different tasks and from different areas • Networked with people from all over the company • I feel I made a difference at ULA this summer through • Bringing another view to the table when looking at things • Working procedures through Orbits • Running procedures • Having people become more familiar with their systems to be able to train me
